Do you have a draining board with your sink??

We are getting a new kitchen and I can't decide if to have a sink & drainer or under mounted sink with no drainer??

Any advice?

We're having a solid wood worktop so we got a sink with a drainer as otherwise the water will damage the wood. If we'd splashed out on the ceramic worktop I had my eye on, we'd have gone with undermounted with draining grooves cut into the worktop.

I have under mount sink with grooves cut into the granite. We have a dishwasher and a big butler sink in the utility so don't really use the kitchen sink to wash up.

Skinnyjeansandaloosetop · 30/01/2020 20:29

We moved into a house with a round sink and no draining board and it’s a pain in the arse. I had to buy a sloped board thing to put the metal dish drainer on. And in spite of this water still goes everywhere and has started to go into and warp the door on the base unit under the sink.

@Belindabelle are you happy with the grooves in the worktop for the drainer? Any negatives?

@Skinnyjeansandaloosetop Hmm that's what's worrying me!

We've got a bowl and a half sink with no drainer or grooves. We put 99% of stuff in the dishwasher so we decided we didn't need one. Two years on and I haven't regretted it

Soontobe60 · 30/01/2020 21:18

I have a full sink unit, one and a half bowls plus drainer.
My DD has a under counter Belfast sink with grooves in the worktop. There's no real leakage of water over the worktop, but the sink is already damaged from heavy pans and it's a hugger to keep clean up underneath the worktop above the rim of the sink!

Soontobe60 · 30/01/2020 21:19

If money had been no object I would have had a compositenworktop with the sink as part of it (not sure how to describe it)

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/01/2020 21:22

Everything goes in the dw here so if I had my way I’d have a tiny under mounted sink as I only really need to fill the kettle & wash fruit in it.

I’m talking seriously tiny. Dinner plate sized.

goingtotown · 30/01/2020 21:35

I’ve have under-mount bowl & half with grooves in the quartz. I decided I didn’t want groves but the quartz was delivered with grooves. I’m so happy with it & now realise I would have to use a cloth or rack to lay the washing up on when I wash baking trays & big items by hand that don’t fit in the dishwasher.

Belindabelle · 30/01/2020 22:04

The grooves are fine. They do help to direct the water into the sink and they are unobtrusive. In the utility I have an oak worktop and I use an absorbent mat on top of a plastic tray.

PermanentTemporary · 30/01/2020 22:06

I had a full size sink and a drainer. Love it. I do a lot of jobs in the sink and like some elbow room.

Rosehipbubbles · 30/01/2020 22:10

Nope - new kitchen here - all the kitchen places said smooth worktop and get a Joseph Joseph drainer- so we did - works brilliantly - it's only really pots that it is needed for. I've got this one.

Do you have a draining board with your sink??
BananaLeafLady · 30/01/2020 22:14

Undermining sink in l minute no drained.
Everything goes in dish washer. Had it 2 years now. Looks good as new and I've not missed the drained. I never have clutter hanging around/drying either. It's a win win.

Andonandonan · 30/01/2020 22:15

We’ve got an undermount sink and no grooves in the worktop...I just didn’t want them. I love my beautiful expanse of smooth worktop and with the dishwasher & utility sink we hardly ever do any washing up anyway. We have a very pretty Joseph & Joseph drainer for the odd occasion we wash stuff by hand - mostly it lives in a cupboard.

MinesaPinot · 30/01/2020 22:20

No draining board here. We've only got a small kitchen so didn't want to lose worktop space. We've got a round bowl and one of the Joseph Joseph trainers that tucks in a cupboard. Most stuff goes in the dishwasher anyway.

CatsMother66 · 30/01/2020 22:43

No draining. We have a double butler sink, wash in one side and drain in the other and love it.
Had an under mount sink with grooves in the granite top in my last house and didn’t really get on with it. The grooves didn’t drain all the water and water would collect around the seal with the upstand and inbetween the grooves. As I would leave the dishes draining until dry, the water would collect and stand underneath and the granite lost its shine a bit. I suppose it wouldn’t be a problem if you dried them straight away though.

misspiggy19 · 30/01/2020 22:47

Grooves in the worktop don’t drain the water away.

I had an undercount but regretted it. Now have a sink with draining board- much more practical

AnnaMagnani · 30/01/2020 22:53

Yes but I don't know what it is for and I don't use it except for piling more stuff on as in current kitchen there isn't enough worktop.

New sink is coming into new kitchen next week - living the dream with a double butler sink and no draining board.

Can't wait. Everything goes in the dishwasher anyway. I just need a place to pile it before DH stacks the dishwasher.

Herocomplex · 30/01/2020 22:57

I don’t have a draining board, I got a neat little plate rack with an integral tray from IKEA (Bestående) then put it away in the cupboard under the sink when I don’t want to look at it.

BennytheBall · 30/01/2020 22:58

No. We have oak worktops and a butler sink. Everything goes in dishwasher so no need for draining board.

Whoops75 · 30/01/2020 22:59

I’ve had both,
Granite with grooves is good for a busy house where the dishes pile up.
We have less kids living at home now and reconfigured kitchen. We kept the Belfast sink with no draining board.

I prefer having no draining board, I’m less inclined to let fishes pile up.

WellTidy · 30/01/2020 22:59

Stainless steel sink and a half here with stainless steel draining board.
