Would you leave a job after 8 weeks?

This may be a long one so bare with me!!
I worked in my previous role for six years, I absolutely loved the job but the pay was awful, I was part time and no scope to go full time, but I really really enjoyed the work, the people and the whole culture of the place.
In November I made the decision to leave to a better paid job, full time but excellent hours which meant I was home for 4.10, ten minutes from home, excellent pension and excellent pay. I started there in the last week in November and since then I have been so so bored! The work is dull, I ask for things to do but it’s all bitty admin type works (I work in a specific role and am qualified to do so) but no actual work is materialising! The job description doesn’t match what I am doing at all! I have spoken with my manager who just doesn’t seem bothered I am doing nothing! But I am so so bored! The atmosphere at work is quite toxic and the culture is awful, I dread going into work for 8 hours and trying to look busy! I also can’t sit there reading/on the internet etc.
Honestly would you cut your losses and leave? If you had another job to go too? And if so what would you say about the roll to a new employee? How can you maintain professionalism but say the job isn’t right for you? Does it look really bad if I don’t just give it a try?
I have no idea what to do!!!

I think it depends a bit on the culture of the area you work in. Leaving a job after 8 weeks would look really bad in my area (nursing) so I would try to suck it up in a job I hate for at least a year for the sake of my career.

At least I'd have another go at trying to address the difficulties you are having with a manager.

Overmylimit · 30/01/2020 17:41

Yes I would leave! I have been in a job where there is nothing to do and it's soul destroying. I could go on the web though, no idea how I'd have coped if I couldn't.

If it was only for 2 months I'd leave it off my CV too.

A teeny bit outing but I actually work in hr!

I'd look for another job.
In the meantime is there something you can do to look like you are busy working but doing something like writing a novel, learning something?

Redcrayons · 30/01/2020 17:46

I couldn't afford to leave without a job to go to. However, I'd definitely start looking around and start applying after another month. At least then you can say you tried it for 3 months and the role isn't what they advertised. You could fudge it with 'budget cuts' so you can't do the work you're supposed to be doing.

I've got a history of long service (10 years, 5 years and 8 years) so I'd hope they'd recognise I'm not a job hopper.

I left a job after four weeks. I hated it from day one. I’d been lucky enough to have two long term jobs before that, both at brilliant places, brilliant people (some of whom I’m still friends with nearly thirty and twenty years, respectively, later) so this job was a real shock. I got offered another position late on the Friday night of the fourth week just before I was due to go on holiday and so I left my resignation letter on the bosses desk before I went. Such a relief.

gingajewel · 30/01/2020 17:52

All of my other jobs have been for years, I’m really not a job hopper but being bored all day is taking it out of me, I just feel so unhappy!
I definitely can’t leave until I have another role and am happy to stay there until I have something else, this role just isn’t for me at all, I want to get my teeth into a hr role and at the moment I’m doing general admin that anyone could pick up!

Is there a reason what you're doing doesn't match the job description? Why did they recruit you if they didn't need you?

gingajewel · 30/01/2020 19:11

It’s a local authority job, tbh I think there is a culture of that position has always been there so nothing needs to change!

I went to a new job as it seemed so promising. It was awful. Like you, I had nothing to do all day. My boss was so used to doing it all herself she could not get out of that habit. I taught myself Access programming and learnt business French whilst at work as there was nothing else for me to do.

I ended up looking for another job after 3 months. The next job was with a big Company and they thought my reason for leaving, considering what i was doing before, was perfectly acceptable.

HoldMyLobster · 30/01/2020 19:45

I've had two jobs I've left after 8 weeks. I've never regretted leaving either.

PlomBear · 30/01/2020 19:50

I left a job recently after half a day!

I’ve left a couple of jobs within a month and leave them off my CV obviously. I have no qualms about leaving if it’s not working for me.

DecemberSnow · 30/01/2020 19:54

Leave but i would be honest with my next employer.....
