Tax return - reducing payment on account

I've just (finally!) submitted my SA tax return and paid my tax owed for 18/19 but the amount it's asking for on account is far larger than I was expecting. My earnings were down for5 months last year due to illness so I've asked for a reduction of £800 & explained why. I've paid the reduced amount but worried that I might get a fine for late payment if they don't accept my request - any ideas how I can find out or do I just assume it's ok? No chance getting through on the phone day before deadline Hmm

@Houseyhousey did you get a confirmation on screen that your reduction request has been accepted? Did you screenshot the page? Even if you did not , don't worry because payment on account is assumed tax for next year so only interest is charged if the tax is not paid on time. If your reduction of payment on account did not get through you will get a due payment request letter in a few days by post or you will see online on your account after 48 hrs from today(amount of time they need to process the request)

You can always sent another request (not 100% sure) if there is a doubt and screenshot this time.

Thank you. It was done (& shows) at the end of my tax return so the only confirmation I've got is receipt of the whole return not specific acceptance of my request.

@Houseyhousey i have never made a request to reduce payment on account on tax return itself. There is a separate link on the online self assessment webpage to do that. But if there is an option on doing it with self return and your return shows that you have done it then it might be okay. Alternatively if you want to send a request again you can do it via your online account. You can check back your account after 48 hrs and after a couple days to see your balance and if it is zero then you are good. Any amount that is due after 31 Jan will only attract interest till next 29 days.
