Fair split of housework, what works?

I’m after a bit of practical advice, this is going to be very dull...

If you and DP work the same number of hours and split the housework pretty much 50/50 how do you split it?

Is it easier / more practical to each aim to do half of more or less everything, or to divide the bigger jobs by sort? So, say, X is takes main responsibility for the washing and Y takes the hoovering and dusting.

What about cooking?

Just generally, what works?

I’ve a feeling that some sort of plan might help avoid some faff and friction, but what sort of plan?

Dh and I each work long days part of the week. I usually work longer 3 days a week and dh 2 days. On the days we aren’t working long hours, we do most everything. For instance, I leave the house before anyone is up and I get home 7-8 ish, so dh does all the morning stuff, school runs, any cooking, washing up, shopping, bins, homework, etc on those days and then I do the bulk of it the other days. On the weekends, it’s mostly equal though I tend to do the meal planning and shopping (because I care more about it) and the family calendar (same), and I do more stuff with dcs as I spend less time with them during the week. Dh tends to sort things like certain bills (internet, council tax, etc), I do nursery (obviously we pay them jointly, we just tend to remember to make certain payments ourselves and not the others). I do more of the social organising, he does more gift buying (because no one would ever get a birthday gift if it was left to me).

We both work similar (more than) FT hours, though I do more travel/commuting, so I tend to have less flexibility. It works well for us. I’m exhausted but not because of housework or life admin.
