DS1 starts school in September and DS2 will receive his 30hrs funding the same term. I have 2 options for DS2 and not sure what to go for.

  1. Stick with current nursery where he has been for past 18 months and is well settled but who don't offer term time only. He'd be going 4 days per week all year around but i can't see him wanting to go in when his brother is at home. His nursery is ok but have a high staff turnover which i don't like.
  1. Change to a nursery that is part of a private school for a year and send him term time only for 4 days per week. Staff turnover is low but he doesn't know anyone there and this nursery is slightly further away.

I'm self employed. The current nursery would cost double the second one so if he stays put i could only take 5 weeks of leave relying on family/DH to cover the rest for older DS in school holiday.
If i changed him i could take 8 weeks of leave to look after them both and DH can do the rest.
It seems like a no brainer to change him but i'm worried about unsettling him as he likes the nursery he attends now. WWYD?

I would change. We moved DD to the nursery attached to the primary school she would likely attend. Previously she had been at a private nursery from ages 11 months to 3.5 yrs. She had a bit of a wobble on the first day, few tears for the following few days and then fine. And settling into reception has been a breeze as she already knew the school and recognised the teachers, and had friends that moved with her from nursery.

Thanks. The new nursery isn't attached to the primary school so do you think it's worth changing him just for a year where he'll have to make new friends only to leave for primary school a year later? I'm possibly overthinking it. Do 3 year olds care about friendships at that stage or are they quite adaptable?

Ah ok, I thought you meant it would then feed into the school.

I think I'd still move tbh, they are very adaptable in my experience. When we moved DD, she didn't really have any friends, she certainly didn't talk about anyone at the old nursery. If it makes life easier then I'm sure it would be fine. And will be good experience for getting used to a new environment like he will when he starts school.

We changed in a similar situation and saved £££, my Dd didn't really like the first nursery though so it was a no brainer. Best move ever.

Whatsthekey · 29/01/2020 16:14

Thanks for your input. I'm quite keen to change him to save the money and have more holiday with both of them. DH is not so keen and thinks it would really affect him which has made me wobble a bit.

I would definitely change. Double the cost and less family holiday makes it an obvious choice to me.
Plenty of kids change nursery or move house etc and manage just fine. He is there 4 days a week so it won't take long for him to get to know everything.

Change. They're very adaptable. Doesn't mean he'll lose friendships he's already made, necessarily, he just gets to make extra ones.

I would change nurseries
