And yet another stupid school rule.

DD 12 brought home a pink water bottle yesterday, I thought she'd brought home somebody else's, as she usually takes a bottle of Evian because she's forever losing them.

No, this is new required equipment, with the school logo, her name and form on. I'm just worried that she'll lose it and I'll have to pay for a replacement, and another, and another.

I'll be back later, picking up DS2.

She needs to learn to be responsible for her own things at some point. This is a good place to start

AlaskaElfForGin · 29/01/2020 15:17

Why is encouraging children to look after their possessions and reduce waste a 'stupid rule'?

Juliette20 · 29/01/2020 15:17

Use it until she inevitably loses it then go back to the Evian.

In my experience no-one bothers with water bottles in secondary school after Y7 anyway.

cjt110 · 29/01/2020 15:18

My Y1 child has a water bottle with his name and class on. He hasn't managed to lose one yet through his 2 years at school. They are £1.50 from school to replace if needed.

BakewellGin1 · 29/01/2020 15:19

This is a good idea... I agree totally. However I know my DS11 loses these on a regular basis - school, football matches and so on - they are named etc however guarentee at least once a month we buy a new one

cjt110 · 29/01/2020 15:19

@PhilomenaChristmasPie If we forget ours - on a rare occasion we have - the school just give him a cup of water. Surely they can also do this for a 12 year old?

Juliette20 · 29/01/2020 15:20

Many kids do "look after their belongings". Until other kids nick them as they've lost theirs. The worst things for being nicked or mixed up and the wrong item taken home and never returned is when everyone has the bloody same jumper/bag/water bottle. Named, but kids can't be arsed to look for a tag.

LoonyLunaLoo · 29/01/2020 15:20

That’s a great rule. There’s really no excuse for single use plastic bottles in this day and age, unless out in an emergency I guess!

Juliette20 · 29/01/2020 15:22

they are named etc however guarentee at least once a month we buy a new one

Exactly and at least Evian type plastic water bottles are reusable up to a point and recyclable. The replacement ones you keep having to buy won't even be recyclable.

BakewellGin1 · 29/01/2020 15:22

In addition to my last post however... DS is getting increasingly more reliable at remembering to collect his before home. I keep drumming it into him same as I do with the whole remember book bag, packed lunch etc - funny enough he remembers his football boots

Strugglingtodomybest · 29/01/2020 15:23

My DS2 kept losing stuff until I started making him pay for it. It really focussed his mind Grin

Santa01 · 29/01/2020 15:23

Also those single use plastic bottles shouldn't be refilled, that's why they are called single use, they leach chemicals...

whoami24 · 29/01/2020 15:25

Did the girls get pink water bottles and the boys blue!

BohoBunney · 29/01/2020 15:55

But it's now required equipment, so if she turns up without it, she'll get a demerit. She won't get it back until she next has English.
Why cant she go back to the class in a break / end of the day?

She knows she's leaving them. She's very absent minded.
She knows she is leaving them therefore she is not absent minded she is just lazy and knows mummy will sort it out.

I really can't afford to keep replacing the school bottles
You're clearly buying single use plastic water at some point though, so stop buying it (and actually give a shit about the planet, it's on it's fucking knees!). Or make her pay for a replacement! I bet after a few times she has to delve into her own money she will suddenly become a lot more capable. She's 12 not 2. I bet she doesn't misplace her phone / ipad / whatever else is important to her.

😂🤣😂🤣

Don’t open that can of worms!

slipperywhensparticus · 29/01/2020 15:59

I was going to ssk why pink 🤐

edwinbear · 29/01/2020 16:00

My DC have had their own water bottles since Reception. One is now Y3 and one Y6, I can count on one hand the number that have been lost over a total of 11yrs. I'm amazed she's never had one before Confused

Drum2018 · 29/01/2020 16:03

Well maybe now your dd will just have to step up and take responsibility for her belongings at school and not freely leave plastic bottles lying around the school, just to simply pick up another one from your supply when she gets home. It might teach her a thing or 2 about the environment as well as teaching her how to look after her things. That can only be a good thing so definitely not a stupid school rule.

Erismorn · 29/01/2020 16:06

Our school PTA did this (school branded reusable bottles) at the start of the term. Lovely idea, but by day four everyone had reverted to their own reusable bottles, amid much muttering about how books and reading records were now all crinkly.

PTA clearly didn't leak test the bottles first 😂

Pinkbonbon · 29/01/2020 16:07

Meh, I wouldn't imagine they will enforce anything. I mean if they do then, 'I'll drink whatever the hell I want out of whatever the hell I like thanks' would be a fair enough response right? Advise her to try hold onto it but if it goes missing you won't be replacing it and if the school have a problem with that, tough titties.

noblegiraffe · 29/01/2020 16:13

They could easily enforce ‘no drinking out of single use plastic bottles in lessons’.

colderthananeskimosknob · 29/01/2020 16:20

Is this also to cut down on the vcso girl hydroflask thing? According to my dd you're not a proper vsco girl unless you have a hydroflask (which are £££).
There has been some quite nasty bullying at my daughters school over the whole vsco girl thing.

SoupDragon · 29/01/2020 16:23

What is a vsco girl?

maddy68 · 29/01/2020 16:23

Great idea. Reduced single use plastics
