Did your newborn get a vit k jab in the last 5 years?

When I had my first 2 children in 2006 and 2007 they both had vitamin k jabs that I had to consent to, which I did obviously being told they needed them.
But when I had my 3rd in 2014 they didn't do one when I asked about it the midwife seemed shocked and said 'god no we don't do that any more' she didn't say why (I didn't ask - I had just given birth!)
But yesterday I was on an NHS childbirth site dated 2019 and it said 'when your baby is born it will get a vit k jab...'
So do they still do it or not???

I had children between 2010 and 2020 and all have had it, across two different countries. How odd you weren't offered.

meandmylot · 29/01/2020 14:04

@pollysproggle I think the link is between vit d and breastfeeding, though I'v been told it's not necessary.

Sunflower1987 · 29/01/2020 14:07

Neonatal Nurse here... it’s offered to all babies of any gestation. In my (individual) experience, I’ve never known any parent decline it.

@meandmylot
Ah Thant will be it!
I think also they offer different things depending on where you live. Not sure if that applies to vitamin K but with my 2016 baby I wasn't given vitamin D drops or advised to give them to my baby.
A friend who had a baby the same month did- she was in lewisham borough and I was in Bromley.

BertieBotts · 29/01/2020 14:15

That's really odd. I declined it in 2008 for DS1 because I couldn't stand the thought of my PFB having an injection Blush he had the oral dose, which at the time I was assured was just as effective.

Had DS2 in 2018 in Germany and I was all ready to accept it but actually they only do drops here! And it was different as well, DS1 had to have several doses over several days whereas DS2 just had it the once or possibly twice, I can't remember (the first one was probably in NICU without me, the second would have been before we were discharged, so I got a bit confused with all the stuff they were doing to him)

usernotfound0000 · 29/01/2020 14:21

2015 and 2019 and yes both had it.

mindutopia · 29/01/2020 14:28

Yes, both of mine had it in 2013 and 2018.

sanityisamyth · 29/01/2020 15:04
  1. I think mine did!
Xyzzzzz · 29/01/2020 15:05

Dd born in August had it

thismeansnothing · 29/01/2020 15:15

My 2012 and 2019 babies both had it

ReginaGeorgeous · 29/01/2020 16:34

Mine both had it and my children are both under 5.

ToriaPumpkin · 29/01/2020 17:31

2011 and 2014 babies here and both had it, we're in the highlands.

Sounds like your midwife was woefully misinformed!

glastogal · 29/01/2020 17:50

My son had one at birth, I believe, and then one or 2 more in SCBU due to clotting issues.

Mummyme87 · 29/01/2020 18:05

Midwife here,
Have been working for 15years and all babies are offered vit k via injection or oral drops. Injection is a one off and drops are double the dose at birth, 7days and 4weeks.

As far as I’m aware it’s still being offered everywhere in the uk regardless of how your are feeding baby.

I have however come across
A fair few couples decline it

Daisychainsandglitter · 29/01/2020 18:07

Both mine did 2014 and 2017

Blitzen2 · 29/01/2020 18:12

2010 and 2016 mine had it

Marmite27 · 29/01/2020 18:14

2015 & 2018. They both had it.

stophuggingme · 29/01/2020 18:15

2014, 2016 and 2017 all of mine had it done

littlemissalwaystired · 29/01/2020 18:19

Midwife currently - always offered

Mama1219 · 29/01/2020 18:22

2019 baby, born in London. I refused the vitamin K shot & wasn't allowed to leave the hospital without seeing a consultant.

RAINSh0wers · 29/01/2020 18:23

Yep, both my DD’s, one in 2014 and the other 2018 both had the vitamin K.

NotGenerationAlpha · 29/01/2020 18:24

Late 2014 so still within 5 years and yes we had it,

WildForTheNight · 29/01/2020 21:18

Where are you/where did you have your baby, OP?

Midwife here and similar to what everyone else is saying- one off injection offered at birth or x 3 doses or oral drops (birth, 5-7 days and 28 days). Third oral dose isn't needed if you're mixed or formula feeding though because it's in formula.

AngeloMysterioso · 29/01/2020 21:21

My 12 wk old DS had one.

BoxedWine · 29/01/2020 21:37

Formula is indeed fortified with vitamin k, so a formula fed baby who doesn't have the jab is at less risk, but it's still not as effective as the jab.
