To be pissed off with Drs

8 week old DC, reflux is getting worse, more so over this weekend. I dread every feed, it takes an hour and a half of her screaming, going rigid and fighting me OR she falls asleep after 30ml and wont take any more. Either or is then usually finished off with her projectile vomiting on everything. To say this is wearing me down is an understatement. I called the DRS this morning desperate for just anything to help. Got told to call HV. Called HV, mine is on AL again and someone would call me back, no one has called me back. Dc had her jabs, so tried again for an appointment, got one in a week.. i dont think i can manage till the end of today, let alone another week. I just feel like giving up and no one gives a shit!

I hope LO is ok OP.
Please consider making a formal complaint about the receptionist.

Took me an hour and a half to get 120ml in her, not helped by her having her jabs today. Dr didnt prescribe Gavascon because it can cause constipation and she didnt want to put any stress on her bowels so prescribed Ranitidine but said there was a shortage of it. Tried two local late night pharmacies and the 2nd one basically said i wont be able to get it and told me to go back and get something else, i looked online and found this :- All oral formulations of Ranitidine are anticipated to be out of stock, with no date for resupply until further notice
No new patients should be initiated on treatment with ranitidine oral products.

So im not closer really and have to hunt every pharmacy within a 10mile radius tomorrow and ultimately fight to get past the receptionist AGAIN to get something else

It's well known that ranitidine is a nightmare to get hold of just now. It's coming in dribs & drabs. Just call the surgery & explain you have tried everywhere. The Dr should prescribe an alternative no bother. I'm sure if you speak to your local pharmacist they will call for you if you have any issues. Just make sure you have an up to date weight for the LO.

Have you considered cows milk protein allergy? My prem baby had this. I was breastfeeding so had to exclude it from my diet but later fed baby with special formula (prescribed). Push for a trial of a specialist formula. A few years ago aptimel Pepti was the cheapest to prescribe and neocate the most expensive.

Sleepycat91 · 30/01/2020 05:33

Yeah i did mention it, shes seeing her again in 2 weeks time. Presumably if its CMPA the medication wont work?

It will help but only specialist formula (or going dairy free if you're BF) will really make a difference. DD was on nutramigen and omeprazole. Gaviscon made things worse.

Oblomov20 · 30/01/2020 06:26

What a stupid GP! To knowingly prescribe something, to a desperate woman, that is out of stock?

cz123 · 30/01/2020 06:27

Why don't you go to the out of hours service? If she is genuinely bringing up everything you are giving her I would stress that you are very worried she is becoming dehydrated.

Idolovechocolategimmygimmy · 30/01/2020 07:11

It's awful and I went through this with my little girl. So much crying. I tried everything. Infacol and propping her bed up so she's not completely flat. Nothing worked and I just had to let it run its course. It got better after weaning but my girl was preemie and wasn't ready till she was 8 months. It was torture. I'm due number 2 in May so hoping this one will be different. I guess what I'm saying is there's not a lot to do. Maybe look at changing milk if not BF, sometimes the doc will give something similar to gavisgon if I remember correctly. But mostly you just have to wait til they grow out of it. I hope I'm wrong though!

TheNoiseHurts · 30/01/2020 09:20

OP my baby is on ranitidine and the other option we are exploring is crushing some of the tablet into water.
It's not ideal but we are rather reliant on it and the last of our liquid formula is about to run out ☹️

Sleepycat91 · 30/01/2020 09:22

The last pharmacist i spoke to suggested that and wrote it down for me. Ill have to ask for that, im going to try a few more today but i cant spend all day running around for it plus juggling DD and her feeds xx

Told you youd get one! I'm so pleased you did.

Sleepycat91 · 30/01/2020 19:27

6 pharmacies later, all said the same thing. Cant get it. Spoke to the dr who said the tablets cant be broken down to a small enough dose for her so just have to live without it. So im back to square one. Using colic bottles now, see if that works and thats all i can do

The other alternative that can be used in babies is omeprazole. Which is a totally different supply chain...
