Reposting from women's health for traffic ....

So a couple of years ago I got a UTI which ended up as a kidney infection and sepsis. I had none of the classic symptoms of burning or extreme kidney pain or even a temperature until it became septic - all I had was increased frequency. This happened twice within a few months. It was terrifying.

Nothing identifiable has ever grown in the lab but dipsticks variably show leucozytes / blood and most recently nitrates.

Since the sepsis I've had UTI symptoms frequently and just now am on third course of antibiotics. I've had a CT scan and cystoscope which show nothing.

I've been drinking more and tried cranberry pills, I've just ordered d-mannose tablets.

Can anyone sympathise or advise? tbh it's not the physical symptoms that are bothering me the most it's the fear of getting sepsis again. I'm living in a state of constant worry. Also the fear something serious is underlying all this.

Now I'm not peeing that much but when I wake it's uncontrollable and my temperature is sometimes 37.7.

Hi OP

I different awfully with recurring UTI’s for around 2 years. Nothing at all was ever found through all the checks and investigations, I was on antibiotics almost constantly and was just exhausted. Then it all seemed to disappear!

4 years later I was 36 weeks pregnant and went to hospital with awful pains, it was a UTI which had turned into a kidney infection and sepsis! Led to DC being delivered by EMCS as I was verging one septic shock by the time they found what it was. I completely understand your fear of getting sepsis again. It’s the worst I’ve ever felt in my life.

I tried cutting things from my diet to see if anything was causing the problems, after advice from my GP. I cut things out over a few months and found that any spicy foods tended to give me UTI’s. Absolutely no explanation at all and really bizarre.

I also keep on top of drinking water (I only drink water unless I am out for lunch/dinner etc) and I drink tons!

I found cranberry done absolutely nothing for me.

Hope you find something that works for you. It was trial and error for me.

Thanks @Villanelle92 it's such a horrible experience isn't it? I'm glad you're ok now , it just have been extra frightening being pregnant at the time too.

Oh god it’s awful isn’t it - I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. I had frequent recurrences a few years ago & it turned out that I had an infection in my cervix & that the uti’s were a secondary symptom. Might be worth checking out?

Bumping to ask if anyone's tried D-Mannose

Ps thanks @CoraPirbright I've wondered before if it could be a secondary infection - how did the discover it was in your cervix?

I was referred to a urologist consultant who carried out various tests & found it. One specific bout of anti-bio’s later & all was well. I would push for a referral from your GP if you haven’t already done so.

Re D-Mannose, I tried it following glowing reviews on here but I did succumb to a uti whilst taking it. I think that most uti’s are caused by a specific bacteria which D-M works for....but not 100% are caused by that one so it won’t work if you get hit by a different bacteria.

I found that most supermarket cranberry tablets just aren't strong enough. I use the Vitabiotics ones which are much more concentrated and they do the trick for me.

thaegumathteth · 30/01/2020 14:48

Thanks both

I've seen a urologist for the cystoscope and CT scan and am already on super concentrated cranberry

Being very careful to ensure faecal matter isn't being accidentally transferred to your urethra could be key. It was for my friend so always wore thongs and it contributed to the transfer. She was in hospital for quite a while when the infection reached her kidneys and it was ecoli. Have they swabbed your to see what strain of bacterial nasty it is OP.

Sympathies by the way. I got a horrific UTI in a very remote part of the globe. Pee looked like rose wine. The medic wanted me to pee into a tiny container in a portaloo in the pitch black. That was fun...
