If you have foot drop what shoes do you wear?

I've got foot drop on one side due to MS. I've been wearing boots with a small heel as they help me get a swinging stride but I think they're making my leg more lazy, and I'd like to get more movement and bend in the knee iyswim. Trouble is I keep scuffing my toe and tripping in flat shoes. I'm thinking about rocker soles but I'm not sure I could balance? I definitely can't walk in completely flat shoes. I also need a lot of toe room for my clawed toes.

It's so confusing and I'm convinced I could walk a lot better and safer if I could just find the right shoes. Please recommend me any that have helped you Smile

Have you seen an orthotist? Not necessarily for hideous orthopaedic shoes but for the gadgets they have that can help

Thank you Felicity I have without much joy. They gave me a hard uncomfortable splint thing that I couldn't walk with, and an electrical stimulator that was a pain to use. All the useful gadgets seem to be available privately only and I can't afford them. They've never given me any advice as far as footwear is concerned.

I'm resigned to the fact that if you have disability from ms you're pretty much on your own as far as the NHS is concerned. For example I've just had to fork out £160 for a good rollator that doesn't hurt my hands or shoulder, and that was second hand on eBay!

Hi Op I have foot drop and clawed toes too, due to Cerebral Palsy and I have similar issues with Footwear
I always wear shoes or boots from Clark's as they are very supportive with " safe" soles..( ie non slippery)
and I also cannot wear ballet pumps or converse etc Have a look on the Clarks website I find the Trigenic range so comfortable and not frumpy either... even though I'm 55!
As an aside Please ensure you are receiving the appropriate rate of PIP as this would help with your disability aids and equipment too... I also use a Rollator You are also entitled to claim VAT exemption on new equipment for items related to your disability Good luck in finding suitable footwear

I have a condition with similarities to ms and second Clark’s boots. Am on 3rd pair of Morgan Carla now, I find something comfortable and safe and stick with it!
I have orthotic shoe inserts also from podiatrist. They offer a bit more stability and lift so getting your toes up less of a problem. They were on NHS however podiatry where I am is pretty much ringgenced for diabetic cases currently. Ask gp for referral.

A colleague with foot drop (no idea of the cause) would wear Dm shoes

Thank you for the replies. I do get PIP at the correct rate ta. The heeled boots I wear now are from Clarks, they're fantastic for toe room and width without looking awful.

I think I will ask to see the podiatrist again, and maybe try a silicone orthotic. I would love to try a WalkAide (functional electrical stimulator) but they're 3k+ I understand!

My ex husband had foot drop due to MS, he had an ambulance that fitted on the tongue of his shoes & a band that went round his ankle, there was a stretchy loop that connected then together & held his foot up.

An ambulance! Grin

I can't work out what you meant to type but it sounds interesting so I'll have a google thanks.
