Hi I’m planning on moving to chesterfield within the next year, most likely Calow specifically. Is this a nice area/ any other good areas worth considering. Also can you recommend any good bars and restaurants/general good nights out in chesterfield. Smile

I don't think Chesterfield has a brilliant nightlife, but to be fair, I haven't been out there. I've only seen a few bars in the town centre - it's quite small.
There are a few retail parks and a cinema just out from town.
Sheffield is better much better for nightlife.

I’ve just moved away for Chesterfield but can answer some of your qs. Calow is nice enough. I lived in Hasland which I really liked.

Can recommend a nursery if you need it in the town.

Nightlife isn’t amazing but there are some nice restaurants! Odessy is a Greek which is lovely, slightly out of town the hunloke arms is a nice pub for food etc.

I'm relatively local, depends massively on what you are into...

Bits of calow are lovely, school is good but quite a trek to the nearest high school so if you don't drive.

Hasland is a much nicer area, has a good village centre, small co op supermarket etc, nice park with a good community group that runs activities in the school holidays.

Restaurants.. Again depends what you kike

Otakuda is nice
Nonnas is lovely
Georgios on whit moor is great

Town centre... Indian blues is a good curry place, Einstein is good but that is pretty much it. And the. The usual like nando and chiquito. Mansfield (about 10miles away) has some really nice Italian places and the surrounding villages have nice pubs.. White Hart at calow is lovely, peacock at cutthorpe, woodside in Ashgate for example.

Bar wise, has a lively nightlife at a weekend, not so much in the week though. Sheffield and Nottingham are better though

Town has a bowling alley, cinema, good sports centre that's relatively new, shops are same as any town.

It's close to the peaks so lots of walking etc, chatsworth house is expensive but lovely, Haddon Hall, Hardwick, bolsover Castle are all good for a few hours...

Feel free to pm

Thanks! Yes nursery recommendations would be fab as well as schools. What are the people like generally, is it nice community?

There is a chain of nurseries in town, jungle, crazy Croc and something lions, all run by smae group. Pricey buy all good, in calow near the hospital is children's 1st, again very good.

Calow c of e school is excellent, hasland infant and juniors is good, brimington has some good schools.

The community around calow doesn't seem to be as good in other areas, not so much of a villagey community spirit of that makes sense, hasland, brimington and other outlying villages seem to have better if that makes sense.

Hasland Hall High school is not great but would be the catchment school for calow I think. Equally springwell is not great, netherthorpe in Staveley is good, bolsover high school is good, St Mary's Catholic primary and Hugh school are excellent schools.

Should you need it there are 2 schools locally that deal with severe learning difficulties and or physical ones, Ashgate croft and Stubbins wood in Shirebrook. Both have excellent facilities Inc hydrotherapy pools etc.

Yep was going to recommend the same as above. The group in town, the one we used was town centre, little lions. Found it amazing, the staff were great.

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 28/01/2020 23:35

@Herculesfan is it wrong that I still think of it as Douglas Robson sports bar BlushGrin

@Bewareofthekitten Chesterfield is a nice town, quiet, sedate and fairly uneventful. If you want somewhere with a bit of life then Sheffield or Nottingham are probably better places!

FAQs · 28/01/2020 23:41

The Pig and Pump is supposed to be nice

Bewareofthekitten · 29/01/2020 13:33

Great suggestions thanks. Is it a generally safe area?

Holymolymackerel · 29/01/2020 13:49

I am 10 years new to Chesterfield and I still stick to where I know. It is generally safe but there are things going on by a minority of people. Such as open drug dealing, petty theft and the occasional beating.

I recommend Calow, hasland and hady areas. All have good primary schools but secondary is more tricky.

A lot of road congestion in rush hour.

Herculesfan · 29/01/2020 14:52

Yep I would say it’s safe enough, I from the rural countryside originally so a terror for leaving the backdoor unlocked for weeks at a time and sometimes the front 🤦‍♀️ But we had no problems whatsoever in either hasland or in the town centre when we lived there. Not that I would advise leaving your home unlocked but basically there didn’t seem to be many opportunists or id have nothing left!

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 29/01/2020 19:21

Yeah perfectly safe. The bus area of the town centre has a big homelessness and drug problem in an evening but mostly the town is low crime, safe to walk through etc
