Tell me about your (smallish) wardrobes that work well for hanging and use of shelves

My daughter has a small room with space for a small double bed, desk and a single (ish) wardrobe.

I have looked online on Ikea as trying to find her an effective wardrobe that has drawers or shelves as well as hanging space. She doesn't have masses of clothes if we could get most of her stuff in one space it would really help!

Any ideas of different brands, retailers or ideas would be very welcome

Hi OP we've a similar issue, Dd is 11. What's frustrating is not so much that the room is tiny, it's actually bit so bad however due to where electrics etc are walled in and crap radiator positions we struggle. She's only got a single bed at the mo too Grin

As we're both lazy arses DH and I have talked of instead of moving, paying a pro to board the loft up properly so we can get storage up there so move some of her furniture into the box room and leave room for a small double bed, wardrobe and table/desk.

So nothing useful to suggest but I'll be watching replies with interest ...thanks for starting!

Have you considered talking to local carpenters to get bespoke stuff done?

IKEA Pax - you can customise it to suit, and it comes in several widths (50, 75 & 100cm, I think, and two depths).
I have a 100cm wide, 60cm deep one, with drawers in the bottom, a hanging section, and a top shelf with two pullout zipped storage bags for occasionally-used items.

A built in wardrobe will always maximize the space. Mirrored ones are good as it makes the room look bigger. Don't go to Hammonds etc, they cost a fortune, look for a good local trades person.

I have the IKEA pax wardrobes, I got the shallower depth and taller height ones to maximise the space in my small bedroom. I have pull out wire baskets, shelves, hanging rail and shoe rack built in them.

We have a funny sized alcove (old stone cottage, not built to be useful or practical!) in our bedroom.
After much planning and agonising we have three of the narrow Ikea Pax wardrobes bolted together. The hanging rails go from front to back rather than left to right, and we have an assortment of shelves and drawers to make best use of the space. For example DH and I have a wardrobe each, both with two hanging rails one above the other. As my clothes are generally shorter than DH's I have space for a couple of shelves in mine, which would otherwise be wasted space.

Okay will look at IKEA pax - might get a quote on something to be built in - might need to post dimensions of room with diagram to see if any creative bods with space can help me,

Thanks for info

Yes I also have Pax - the shallow depth. I filled it with shelves, pull out drawer/basket, and boxes. I have a separate free standing wardrobe for hanging things. In the pax, I cut off some of the shelves and added adjustable 'legs' from another item to make some taller areas (you couldn't just buy shorter shelves or frame dividers for the shallow depth at the time, though I think they have just started doing them). I can put jewellery trees and other tall items in those spaces.

For hanging things, I think the deeper ones are better, though, as with the shallow depth, you need the pull out hangers so that the clothes hangers go in sideways, rather than forward like a normal wardrobe, and I think I'd find it harder to see things that way. But if you don't have room for the deeper ones, you could still get that.

Or get a mix of the deeper ones where you need it for hanging stuff, and shallower ones elsewhere to maximise floor space, and if they are too deep, stuff gets lost on the shelves or you waste the space anyway, unless you have quite large items. the shallow depth is fine for folded up jumpers and tops etc.

Does she need a small double bed? Could you have a single, or one with space under, or a desk?

If the sockets are in the wrong place, you can cut holes in the backs of Ikea stuff quite easily, and then you can still access the sockets, and that can work for stuff that you might want in the wardrobe, like hair dryers, electric razors, or phone chargers, etc, that could stay plugged in (you could plug a power bar into the wall socket, and leave it on one of the shelves in the wardrobe, and then still be able to turn that on and off, if you were worried about leaving stuff plugged in for a long time).
