Any rubix cubers about?

Thought it might be nice to have a chat thread like swimmers/gardeners do etc

I've spent the last few weeks learning the basic algorithms and am currently able to solve it in a little under 3 mins. I need to learn how to solve the first 2 layers together after the white cross but I'll give it a couple of weeks before I start that.

A new cube might help too. I've got a speed cube but it's nothing like the ones you see record breakers using. (Not planning on trying to break any records btw, just aiming for under a minute easily)

Can I join please? I Just bought a cube yesterday after reading this thread last week. It's a Rubik's one but quality doesn't feel great. However at least the colours are not stickers like the ones I had in the 80s.

I learned to do a few moves using a book when I was 12. I can still do it but it's always been a bit trial and error, can take me 2 minutes or 20 minutes! I'd love to be able to do it quickly every time like some of you! I also can't fathom doing it in seconds!

I will look up some of the links on here later. I am also not sure if I could follow YouTube instructions!

When I was in first year at high school (1981/2) I remember Rubik's cubes being banned at school to stop everyone constantly playing them in class. Innocent times!! 😁.

I taught myself how to solve the cube during half term last year in May.
I first bought the vintage book written (by the teen that first solved it I think) and then my mind boggled at how my Mum had ever learned how to solve it from the book as it was so complicated.

I found pics for each stage online to help.
None for doing the white face, with the colours lined up around the side - that I do by eye.

Then there are, I think, 5 other ones you need.

I saved the pics to my phone initially. :) For when I found I forgot a step!

We have lego mindstorms here too. One year, dh built and programmed it to be able to solve the rubix cube.

It took me less time to learn it than it did for him to build and programme his machine, but the machine was more fun!

This page had easy (ish) to follow steps.

That looks handy and I think I had the same book as you!

TenCornMaidens · 04/02/2020 07:21

I can't do it myself but my us and and son are speedcubers and the competitions and events are SO LOVELY. Look up the UK Cubing Association.

I find these steps easiest.

  1. Solve white layer and make sure colours are in the right place around its edges.

DS1 can solve it in under a min. He has about 20 different 'cubes'. His latest one cost about £70 Shock

TabbyStar · 04/02/2020 07:43

I can do it! I haven't got a cube though and haven't done it for a while, I learned when I was about 11 or 12 and I'm early 50s now. I've forgotten some of the moves, but I can get around that. I might buy one. I only had a cheap version that stuck a lot, not the original branded one.

Tigresswoods · 04/02/2020 07:46

I learned when I was 18/19 & can do it in roughly 90 seconds. I've be et bothered to work out the short cuts. DS has a 10y old friend who went to a competition recently & did it in about 10 seconds. Bonkers.

I love the cube but I'm not obsessed & into different sizes etc.

TenCornMaidens · 04/02/2020 08:24

The competitions are v v child-friendly and not only for car y fast cubers btw.

YessicaHaircut · 04/02/2020 08:30

Waves to all cubers and cube widows!

I can’t do it but DH is pretty good, he taught himself a few years ago and can now solve a 3x3 in under 15 seconds. He’s got all sorts of different shaped ones now and goes to the competition in Weston Super Mare every November. I don’t mind as I love reading so in the evenings we’ll happily sit around together with him cubing and me with my nose in a book!

NeilTheBaby · 04/02/2020 17:31

I'm so pleased there are so many cubers out there.

dr I used the start of that method but when it comes to yellow I do the whole of the yellow layer then yellow corners match up then sides match. I find it easier to follow.
I have been watching some videos to move to f2l together but haven't started practising yet.
I bought the 7.99 cube on Amazon last week too. It's amazing! So much smoother than the actual rubix's speed cube. I'm not learning how to flick each layer with my fingers rather than turn with my hands.

yessica how long has this competition being going on? I spent 30 years of my life living in Weston. How did I not know it existed?!

YessicaHaircut · 06/02/2020 10:43

I’m not sure Neil, he’s gone to it for the last 3 years as only got into cubing about 5 years ago. It’s on the last weekend of November, in the pavilion on the pier.

LittleMissGrumpyGrot · 06/02/2020 10:59

WHAT? I had no idea they could be solved in a matter of seconds. I got one for Christmas in 1984 and I'm still working on it! 35 years, 1 month, 12 days, and counting!

PorpentinaScamander · 06/02/2020 13:32

From the latest Guiness World Record.

The amount if different ways they solve them is crazy. I watched the lad juggling and solving 3 in just over 5 minutes. How he even keeps track of what needs turning them manages it in the split second it lands in his hand is mindblowing.

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 06/02/2020 19:28

Can anyone point me to a good resource for solving the 5x5? My husband bought it for me for Christmas - as punishment because I can do the 3x3 so much faster than him Grin.
