Any legal eagles about to say whether or not he can be extradited to the US to give evidence? I'm sure I read at one point that he could be, but Joshua Rozenburg is saying he will be being advised to "tough it out." Which is accurate?

Maybe we could swap him for the woman who killed Harry Dunn.

Not as a witness. US subpoenas aren't recognised in UK courts. However they are recognised in US courts (fancy that !) and if one is served correctly on Mr. Windsor, then he would be subject to it immediate upon entering the US.

The problem he will face if he tries to "tough it out" is to then have to worry if he ever lands up anywhere within US jurisdiction. Which could happen by accident, or by "accident" leaving him powerless to refuse.

The most likely example is a changeover flight in the US, since recent changes have removed the protection transit passengers used to have and are now treated (by the US at least) as occurring on US soil. Meaning a diverted flight could suddenly deliver the Prince gift-wrapped to the US authorities. Who will be very pissed off at being ignored.

The FBI could arrange to interview him in the UK. But the optics in the US would really count against that. Don't be fooled by their cutesy apparent obsession with the royals. They fought a long and hard war of independence to throw off the spongers, and are in no mood as a nation to ever be seen to be kowtowing to them ever again.

And whilst it's OK for me to admit I do not possess - nor will ever need - a comprehensively up to date list of every country in the world and it's extradition arrangements with the US, it would not be OK for anyone advising Prince Andrew on such matters. As he could run a very real risk of visiting a country which does honour US subpoenas.

Thank you @ProfessorSlowcombe - I knew someone on Mumsnet would know! Very interesting point about other countries honouring US sub poenas, and the hazards for Mr Windsor of diverted flights, Sounds like his jet setting days are over.

Sorry - spelling - thanks to @ProfessorSlocombe!

Someone who dabbles in conspiracy theories might notice - as plenty of MNetters and others around the interwebs have done - the "curiousness" of the coincidental issue of Anne Sacoolas ...

Personally I wouldn't waste a penny on a bet there would be any form of swap or deal. But that would be to deny Shakespeare Grin. Prince Andrew is wanted by the FBI, whereas Mrs. Sacoolas is protected by the NSA. Students of US politics (a) have my sympathy, and (b) will know that these agencies have very different paths to the top. The FBI is a Federal Agency of the DoJ, whereas the NSA is a Presidential body. So plenty of scope for turf wars, bunfights and goodness knows what levels of malarky.

One thing to note (and I would hope The Palace has) is that the FBI is completely independent of the President. He has no power over them. Indeed if he were to even so much as hint in a memo, it would be a grave infraction of the separation of powers. Not that I think Trump himself knows or cares about such things. But the people who advise him - and who will go down with him - are very aware. Which is a very long winded way of pointing out that no amount of Boris gladhanding Trump can stop the FBI.

Thanks for that very cogent explanation of the differentiation between the FBI and the NSA. We await the FBI's next move with interest.

What a good idea to swap Andrew.
Yes.

Are they really going to ring the Bells of Westminster Abbey for Prince Andrew's 60th birthday? www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/prince-andrew-birthday-westminster-abbey-bells-councils-flags-jeffrey-epstein-a9322756.html

I saw that about the bells at Westminster for his 60th, the BBC quoted them as saying it was traditional and they don't see any reason to change it Shock
