He was the guest speaker at the Scottish Institution of Chemical Engineers Annual Dinner one year. A friend of mine invited him and he thought it was such a random thing that he did it for half his usual fee. He spoke for about three times longer than he was meant to and was absolutely brilliant. He spent time in the Glasgow shipyards as a young man and his Glasgow accent was immaculate. He stayed around to chat to everyone and was completely charming. A great loss.

Well I thought I might have got my minute in there, but I read it back to myself and it's probably just over 30 seconds and I repeated the word show, so I'm buzzing myself there.

finkploydthethird · 28/01/2020 13:55

You have two minutes with no deviation, repetition or hesistation.

Brilliant programme. The only radio programme that myself and my teenager enjoyed listening to together.

^ one isn't enough for an MN thread Grin

JAM is Just A Minute.Smile

So sad, he was an absolute legend. If I make it to 96, I hope that I am half as sharp as he was.

They've just done a lovely tribute on PM (about 5:17), they are repeating an episode of JAM at 6:30 and there is a Paul Merton programme at 11:00.

ForalltheSaints · 28/01/2020 18:38

I met him at his chat show at the Edinburgh Fringe and he was excellent, and spoke to members of the audience in the beginning including myself. A couple of years before I saw a recording of just a minute with the late Clement Freud and Derek Nimmo.

Sale of the Century was on at I think 6pm on a Saturday during the 1974 miners strike, and that was our allotted time for power cuts. I always associated him with power cuts ever afterwards.

A long life well lived that brought pleasure to many.

BigStripeyBastard · 28/01/2020 18:43

A proper legend. I'm listening to the Just a Minute special on Radio 4 now.
He will be missed!

ShatnersWig · 28/01/2020 19:00

Legend.

They're repeating his show about watches on BBC Four at 8 pm. If you've not seen it, it's charming, like the great man.

CoolCarrie · 28/01/2020 20:33

Lovely funny man, saw him many times at the Edinburg festival and as ForalltheSaints said he was charming , warm and funny, he seemed to enjoy himself as much as his audience and guests did. I loved Just A minute when he and Kenneth Williams used to wind each other up.

OnlyTheTitOfTheLangBerg · 28/01/2020 20:38

He seemed like a genuine gentleman and his work on JAM is the stuff of radio legend. I also saw him as Narrator in Rocky Horror and got to chat with him very briefly at the stage door - somewhere I’ve still got the programme with his autograph. He’ll be missed.

AngelinaGrimke · 28/01/2020 20:46

I shall miss his banter with Paul Merton, seemed like they had a genuine affection for each other.
