Can I take tramadol and diazepam together?

TheChosenTwo · 28/01/2020 10:19

I haven’t done so, I was prescribed tramadol
A while ago for some back issues but it’s spasming now and I’ve been prescribed diazepam. Can I take them together? Something has told me it’s a definite no. The tramadol gives the perfect pain relief and the diazepam provides the perfect muscle relaxants. Together I think they would work to give me optimal conditions to help
Me get some better range of movement and flexibility back. I’ve had a little google which wasn’t conclusive, I’m guessing it’s a no so I won’t do it but is there a website to look at to show comprehensively which medications should and shouldn’t be used together?
I forgot to ask the doctor last week because I was frankly in so much pain and i wasn’t in a fit state to be thinking much beyond the 20 minute appointment.
Tia, and also I’m not intending to overdose on anything and I’m just looking for rational advice. I do think they shouldn’t be taken together but would like some evidence to be proven wrong!!

I’m also looking for a foolproof brownie recipe while I’m here... maybe this warrants a whole new thread!

Can I take tramadol and diazepam together?

  1. Ask your pharmacist or 111, not randoms on the Internet - we don't even know your dosage etc.
  1. This is a Delia recipe, you can leave the nuts out if you want. It is delicious and always works for me.

125g dark chocolate (minimum 70% cocoa solids), broken up
175g block butter
3 large eggs
275g golden caster sugar
75g plain flour
1 level teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
150g Brazil nuts, toasted and roughly chopped, or any other nuts, or a mixture

First put the broken-up chocolate and butter in a bowl over a pan containing 5cm of barely simmering water, without the bowl touching the water.
When it has melted (5–10 minutes) take it off the heat. Next whisk the eggs and sugar lightly together – but don’t overdo this. Stir the egg mixture and all the other ingredients into the chocolate.
Then pour the mixture into 20 x 26 cm tin and bake near the centre of the oven 180 degrees for 30 minutes until springy in the middle.
Leave the cake in the tin to go completely cold before dividing into roughly twelve squares and store in an airtight tin.

I wouldn't recommend tramadol brownies Grin

ScribblyGum · 28/01/2020 10:33

Can’t advise any further as dong know your past medical history.
Call GP and ask for a telephone consult for further advice.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 28/01/2020 10:34

Yes, Other Drugs Are Available WinkGrin

Don't do that with tramadol and diazepam for goodness sake Grin

TheChosenTwo · 28/01/2020 10:42

I thought as much, I’ll leave the tramadol in the locked medicine box! I just forgot to ask when I saw the gp again if I could use them together and just keep going with what she prescribed this time.

My brain is a little fuzzy right now!

Thanks for the brownie recipe, they won’t contain anything they shouldn’t Grin
My dd recommended doing some baking today (she was craving brownies) and I’ve got to go for a walk and keep moving anyway so it will give me something productive to do when I get back.
The recipe I usually use gives us mixed success.

Out of interest, what are CNS depressive effects? Never heard of this.

OP posts:

Oh, central nervous system?

Also, phoned for a telephone appointment recently and it was 11 hours before I got a call back! I’m not bashing anyone, just a reason I thought I’d find the answers online quicker and therefore saving an appointment for someone who was in greater need.

ScribblyGum · 28/01/2020 10:45

Yup. That combo is going to make you drowsy.
In soMe patients that combo will end up with severe confusion/falls.
You need to check with your GP.

TheChosenTwo · 28/01/2020 10:49

I’m not going to take them, will just continue as I am. Just annoying as the tramadol was good for the pain relief and enabled me to move more freely but when it wore off I wasn’t any easier. The diazepam (while it’s in my system) gives me a lot more mobility but I’m still in a fair amount of pain. Would be perfect to combine the two for the benefits and I think I could manage to exercise my way to a good point but it doesn’t appear the best move to take them together (in my head I didn’t think it was a wise move, mn have helped clarify this to me!).

I don't think you're going to get a doctor or nurse to answer your question on an internet forum, as they know nothing about you or your medical history. Way too risky for any healthcare professional to give out medical advice over the phone. You could however call your GP surgery and ask for a call back from the GP/Nurse Practitioner. They'd be able to advise you. Or call 111. Or speak to a pharmacist who could do a consultation.

I hope you get some relief soon.

Mlou32 · 28/01/2020 11:01

*phone..or internet I meant.

TheChosenTwo · 28/01/2020 11:18

@Mlou32 I wasn’t expecting a doctor or a nurse to respond, I was merely interested to see if anyone else had been prescribed these to take together.
As no one has said they have, I’m inclined to err on the side of caution and not do so. If I was being totally silly and irresponsible I would have just taken them and not given it a second though, I’m just feeling slightly irked that the 2 drugs have worked well for different reasons and think the 2 together would bring the relief that I need but I’m thinking that all that would happen is I would just sleep during the active time and miss the period of time where I would be freed up to move and stretch properly Grin
I’ll not take them.

If you ring the pharmacist that dispensed them for you, they may be able to advise you?

I've just made brownies now Grin

Gingerkittykat · 28/01/2020 11:28

Phone your pharmacist to ask, you should get an instant answer that way.

Mlou32 · 28/01/2020 11:39

@TheChosenTwo maybe not, but I wouldn't expect you to be happy to follow medical advice (which is what it is) off someone other than a doctor or a nurse - or other suitably qualified healthcare professional. Hence why I said what I said. A random here could let you know if they had had them prescribed together but they may have totally different medical histories to you.

I take it you've tried all the usual...heat pads etc? Can you maybe get an emergency appt at your GP surgery for today to see if there is anything else they can give you?

Mlou32 · 28/01/2020 11:41

@TheChosenTwo btw I'm sorry if what I said came across narky or rude or whatever. It wasn't meant that way although I do understand that things can come across differently to how they are meant in writing.

sqirrelfriends · 28/01/2020 11:47

Don't know about the drugs but I find the bbc good food brownie recipe the best I've ever had. You just need to halve the sugar ( I think it's an error), add any extras like nuts at the end and they're perfect.

I've tried quite a few recipes over the years and anything with a raising agent just makes them for too cakey for my taste.

TheChosenTwo · 28/01/2020 11:54

@Mlou32 no not at all, don’t worry!
It was just an idle thought of mine this morning!!
No emergency appointments available on the day unless you call at 8am!
And I didn’t think about it until after then.
I had to call and make an appointment for my dd and the soonest one I could make was for the third week in February - they are just totally stretched and under pressure.
I’m just going to leave it, will take what she prescribed to me yesterday and see how I am in a few days. If I need to, I can take a slow walk to the pharmacy! They are lovely in there but I guess they won’t know my medical history either.
I really hoped there would be an online tool where you could see which medications to avoid mixing and which ones were safe to take together but I’m just going to see how I get on.
Thanks everyone for your sensible advice, it was needed and welcomed Flowers
I used to use nigellas snow flecked brownie recipe but in addition to the ingredients costing a ton, the recipe was always very hit and miss. The quantity is so huge that you have to cook it for a long time otherwise the middle bit is actually still runny but the outside was so dry. And they don’t seem to get the right sort of crackle on top!

OP posts:
TheChosenTwo · 28/01/2020 20:41

Update on the brownies, they’ve been in the oven for about 3 years, the middle is still
Raw. I don’t mean slightly squidgy and gooey, I mean actually liquid. We let them cool for half an hour in the hope that they would firm up slightly. Enough to cut. They didn’t. We put them back in for another 10 and then 15 minutes and are now giving up. Why oh why can we never make good brownies Angry

Evening I am not a doctor , I am not a mum but found the debate on tramadol and diazepam interesting , I had a consultation today with my doctor and he prescribed me tramadol and diazepam for sciatic problem that had just occurred in last 2 weeks , I am to take together at the same time due to the severity of the pain and spasms in my leg , I asked if okay he said yes , if you get side affects let me know and we will review , today i am on a 100 mil of tramadol 4 times a day and a very small dose of diazepam 2mg 3 times a day , for me no side affects apart from a bit sleepy but we are in lockdown so not a problem as I am off work , this combination of drugs is very dangerous if you abuse it and it's very individual , if not sure then speak to doctors or chemist but I feel your pain @mlou32 ♥️
