How to tackle midnight snacking?

Hi Mumsnet
I need to get out of the habit of snacking late/during the night. We have dinner between 6-7pm, go to bed 9.30/10 and I'm so tempted to visit the fridge by 11.30/midnight.
Please help me get out of this habit!
Thanks in advance

I have this problem. Best things I've found are snacking on frozen fruit (lower calories and it takes ages to get through) and chain drinking herbal teas! Also, a hot bath tends to stop my snack cravings.

It's such s hard habit to break isn't it? Lying in bed willing myself to go to sleep but I'm so hungry I can't get to sleep!

Go and brush your teeth; you won't want to eat after that.

wibblysnail · 27/01/2020 23:51

I have a glass of milk if I feel hungry

Lying in bed willing myself to go to sleep
Why go to bed so early then? What if you did some light exercise for 3mins before bed?

Have dinner at 8-9 and drink lots of water or green tea afterwards

livefornaps · 28/01/2020 22:29

Tape a sign on the fridge that says "back the fuck off"

adaline · 28/01/2020 22:32

Eat dinner later.

Foghead · 28/01/2020 22:39

Eat more dinner or have some dessert.

SingingSands · 28/01/2020 23:05

Just tell yourself to stop snacking. You don't need a strategy, just flex a bit of willpower.

I usually have something when I put the dog to bed at about midnight - decaf tea and Greek yogurt with something in it (fruit, or a bit of almond butter). But then I rarely want to eat till lunchtime so that works ok for me.
So, if you cant resist eating late, maybe just make it non-junk and instead of something equivalent during the day?

Idontkowmyname · 28/01/2020 23:19

A healthy snack some fruit or veg(carrot, pepper, tomatoes, snow peas/mange tout) would be beneficial nutritionally without too many additional calories.

Idontkowmyname · 28/01/2020 23:19

I’d recommend a healthy snack 30 mins before bed, as per previous post

turnedabout · 30/01/2020 00:15

Okay healthy snack a bit before bed is a good idea. Definitely not kit kats or anything with Nutella...

Are you eating enough during the day and at your evening meal? And are you drinking enough?

I used to be an awful snacker; I'd miss breakfast, eat processed crap for lunch and more often that not dinner. Then be starving so eat crisps, biscuits, chocolate until bed.

Now I only have 1cup of coffee a day (so only one biscuit) I don't buy in all the snacks and shite I used to, stick to popcorn. Drink a ton of water every day and have three reasonably healthy meals. If I get hungry after dinner now I have some cold meat or a slice of cheese then brush my teeth and drink water.

OccasionalNachos · 30/01/2020 00:44

What are you eating for dinner?

Freyanna · 30/01/2020 03:22

I have one weetabix if I feel hungry before bed.
