NHS job posting - short closing date

mnetteranon2020 · 27/01/2020 21:50

I‘be been receiving NHS job alerts to my email and A position I’d like to apply for his just come up. It was up in the autumn but I wasn’t able to apply. It’s now back but the closing day on the advertisement is only two weeks. Is it likely that they’ve already appointed someone and have this advert up for a different reason, that they’ve had to readvertjse despite having someone chosen already? Or are they likely to be seeking a candidate this round?

2 weeks is a genuine posting, if it were 2 days then it'd be ear marked for someone.
Good luck Flowers

Two weeks isn't necessarily that short for NHS especially if it's for a position where they typically get a lot of candidates. I've only ever put out for two-three weeks maximum. I've seen jobs come out with closing dates of 3-4 days and they're likely already filled and going through the motions but for a fortnight I'd go for it!

I've not seen a job in the nhs not go to interview for all those that meet the job spec. ( admittedly I'm nursing so desperate times and all that)

Ime if they had a candidate in mind they probably would have just advertised internally with expressions of interest ( the cost to advertise externally is always a factor), they may want the job filled as quickly as poss if it has been vacant for a while and there are other staff changes on the cards.

Two weeks is not unusual so definitely apply. A short closing date is when the job is advertised on Thursday afternoon and the closing date is the next day as I saw happen once. That was sewn up for a specific person who was promoted above their wit and intelligence

To be honest 2 weeks doesn’t seem a short time, but about normal? We usually post most vacancies for 2 weeks in my Trust. For this specific job, there are all kinds of reasons - the funding may have been withdrawn the first time and now they’re desperate to get someone in post. They may have appointed and it’s not working out and need to replace them ASAP. The chosen candidate may not have passed their clearances so they’ve gone back out to advert and know from last time 2 weeks is sufficient. You may as well apply!

Sorry to hijack your thread but I have a question for anyone that knows about NHS recruitment. I've got an IV on Wednesday for NHS admin.

What I have found really strange and unusual was that when I was offered an interview it was on a set date with no flexibility if you couldn't make it and I was also given no choice about the time, it was allocated automatically online.

Is this the norm? Luckily I can make the day and time of the IV but if I couldn't I would have been ruled out even though I presumably was a good candidate as I was shortlisted for interview.

It could be there is more than one job with the same title, or they didn't appoint in the Autumn. If there is no one suitable, I would not appoint but try again later. Or, it could be the previous candidate has withdrawn- or their DBS has been unsuccessful ( if appropriate) .
Timescale- depending on the job 2-4 weeks is routine. (If you are expecting lots of applicants then 2 weeks hopefully keeps the numbers manageable -300 applicants for a clerical job take ages to process if you are giving them all equal attention) A week or less suggests there are either plenty of internal applicants who are expecting the advert and are ready to go or as PP has said, they have a favoured candidate lined up.

@dimsum123 yes it's quite usual. If you can't make it under those circumstances you can call HR and ask for flexibility. Some will give it some won't. Good luck!
