Paying for a full medical

Has anyone in the U.K. - without private health insurance - ever organised a full medical for themselves? I’m aware that various bits and bobs are tested at various ages but I’d really like the works.

I’ve realised my (very good) healthcare so far has been exclusively NHS and I’ve not been to the dr for ages. Am 46 now and would like to look after myself.

If I went to my NHS GP and asked for a medical I assume they’d need a reason for wanting it?

You could find out if your GP surgery offer NHS Health Checks

I'm in Scotland so that's not available - just routine screening from various ages for specific conditions.

I'd really like to be checked for cholesterol, thyroid malfunction, liver enzymes etc and I'm happy to pay but have no idea if this is done or how! It seems to be routine in the US but then, they are all hoping to make money from the results.

I haven't had liver enzymes or thyroid malfunction checked here in the US - I'm 50 and been here 12 years.

I paid for a full range of blood tests with Medichecks. The nurse game to my house to take my blood. The following things were tested for:
Full liver function
Full blood count
Kidney function
Thyroid function
Vitamin and minerals (magnesium, vit d, vit b12 etc)
Iron levels
Diabetes check
Cholesterol levels
Hormone levels

It cost around £120

I am sure if your gp rarely sees you that would be more than happy to give you a once over and take a blood test, especially if you had some concerns. Try asking them. Failing that, anything medical can be done privately as long as you're willing to fork out.

I had a blood test done when I joined the local surgery. Rather more important is my HGV medical, which tests eyesight, limb function, BP, ECG, and declares I'm mentally sound, not in untreated addiction and not had heart or brain surgery. That's about £60-80.

Thank you! I think that Medicheck thing is closest to what I want.
(Not going to bother the NHS with my slight health paranoia Blush)

Some of the medichecks things you can test yourself at home by finger prick. Other ones require a nurse to visit your home to take blood which costs an extra £40. results come in about 2-3 days later with advice from a doctor etc

My friend used Thriva and was pleased with the service.
