Headbands that aren’t aimed at girls?!

My 10 month old DS has the longest mop of hair, it’s getting in his eyes all the time. He’s worked out how to remove hair clips which then end up in his mouth; not ideal.
I have looked online and tried to find some soft jersey headbands but they all have bows and flowers or sparkly bits on them. I am just after some neutral colours that I can hold his hair off his face. I have checked Zara, H&M and primark but they are all for girls or certainly aimed at girls. There are some on Etsy that would be perfect but come from the US and I need them sooner rather than later!

Has anyone out there found any? Or any recommendations for shops to try?

I absolutely mean no offense at all but I'm only asking because he is so young and I have no personal experience with this so please excuse my ignorance. Can't you just cut it, isn't it easier?

Lordfrontpaw · 27/01/2020 14:18

I got some plain black ones from Boots to stop me setting fire to my hair (long story) - I'm sure they also had plain blue and grey ones too. Just shorten them.

Another one wondering why you don't just cut it.

Just cut it!

BaronessBomburst · 27/01/2020 14:22

I bought plain black ones for DS to wear during sport.i found them in the local chemist. But he's nearly 10 years old and it's his own choice to have long hair and to wash and brush it himself.
For a 10 month old? I'd just cut it, certainly his fringe at any rate.

Grin Yes sorry should have said, he won’t let me anywhere near him with scissors. Took him to the hairdressers they couldn’t do it because he kept moving, tried distracting him with all sorts of things. He’s a shit sleeper at the best of times and me and DH have both tried to snip it in his sleep but he woke up mid cut and as he’s lying down it is all wonky.
Unless I am missing something glaringly obvious? How do I cut it?

@FthisS yes! I seen those but they are big sizes will buy these and sew them if I can’t find anything else.

What hairdressers did you take him to? Up here there are ones which specialise in a child's first haircut so the seats are like racing cars, there are built in tablets and all the hairdresser's are trained in wiggly children

FthisS · 27/01/2020 14:28

@SundaySalon you could try claires they have some paisley patterned ones which don't have bows Smile

A light cotton hat, and cut off the crown? Or just wear it as a hat and tuck his hair under. Sounds like he will pull anything off though!

What I did with mine, and also my much younger brother, was to wrap the child firmly in a large towel, leaving the head exposed. One adult traps the cocooned child between their knees, using their hands to hold childs head still, while another adult snips. Job done in a minute or two.

Technique also works for nail cutting, enforced medicine taking and tooth brushing.

SundaySalon · 27/01/2020 14:31

They didn’t have any snazzy cars but I called up before hand they said yes fine. Then he cried and cried, wasn’t interested in the toys tablets etc. She gave up said if he won’t sit still for even a minute she can’t do it. I just gave up, his hair was long from birth and the hassle of getting it cut somehow didn’t seem worth it so I just clipped it but he’s worked out how to take them out now.

Dancewear shops sell plain (no bows/frills) headbands, but most I have seen are online.

SundaySalon · 27/01/2020 14:34

@FthisS oh Claire’s! Didn’t think of them. Thank you!

This!

Wouldn't a hairband be a strangulation risk at that age?

jamesforagirl · 27/01/2020 14:41

Cut is when he's asleep.

LemonBreeland · 27/01/2020 14:46

I think the battle to cut it would be easier. If her takes hair clips out, he will no doubt pull a hairband off too.

TheRealQueenElizabeth · 27/01/2020 14:46

I look after a little one with the most stubborn thick hair which shoots straight down her face. Head bands won't stay in for more than 5 minutes sometimes I tie it up but most of the time I brush it back or to the side with some organic hair gel for kids. Works a treat to keep it out the way and is helping to train her hair into a side parting!

WilheldivaHater · 27/01/2020 14:59

Could you use a hair elastic instead of a clip to pull the front back into a top knot style? (depending on hair length)

SundaySalon · 27/01/2020 15:04

@TheRealQueenElizabeth what hair gel? Tried a bit of DHs but it didn’t last in his hair and didn’t want to use too much.

@WilheldivaHater it would go into a top knot, so could try that. He doesn’t pull hats off when wearing those so was hoping the headband wouldn’t bother him

Surely burrito blanketing the child and cutting it is quicker and easier than relying on choking hazards (( clips )) and strangulation risks (( headbands ))

Just clamp it between two fingers and snip. It's easy.

TheRealQueenElizabeth · 30/01/2020 19:58

This is the one I use, comb it through in the morning and again once she wakes up

Plenty on ebay in dark colours and without bows.
