A toaster that..toasts. Asking the impossible?

Just that really. I have tried loads of brands, from Argos cheapies to John Lewis' poshest, but have never found one that reliably toasts both sides of a slice of bread evenly.

Any recommendations for one that actually works? I don't need it to do anything fancy - I just want it to toast.

I am 63 and I have never found a toaster that toasts evenly on both sides Sad Don't think they exist!

Eeeeek2 · 27/01/2020 13:30

Dualit ridiculous expensive but they last forever

kjhkj · 27/01/2020 13:31

dualit. But expensive

Nearlyadoctor · 27/01/2020 13:33

Dualit - ours is 10 years old, the timer went and Dualit replaced FOC. All parts are supposed to be replaceable so environmentally better.

NannyR · 27/01/2020 13:34

I've never got on with dualits, I've used them in several houses I've worked in and found they toast really unevenly, I always have to take the toast out and flip it over halfway through.

Villanomme · 27/01/2020 13:36

Another Dualit owner here. Makes proper toast.

ShirleyPhallus · 27/01/2020 13:37

I use the grill

But then I have a weird thing about not having too many kitchen appliances as I hate a cluttered kitchen so I don’t even own a toaster

picklemeCleg · 27/01/2020 13:37

I'm moving on to toasting in a pan, or under the grill, next. No more unnecessary appliances for me.

PlausibleSuit · 27/01/2020 13:38

Another vote for Dualit here. We've got one of the four-slot Classic ones. It's about seven years old and still looks new. It was about £200 I think.

Those rolling/conveyor ones you find in B&Bs always seem to toast well, too, but I would imagine they're commercial kitchen equipment (and expensive).

SnugglySnerd · 27/01/2020 13:39

We use the grill. The problem with toasters is hat bread is different sizes, thickness, has different water content etc so they are never going to suit all types of bread, crumpets etc.

coffeeagogo · 27/01/2020 13:39

I have recently researched this and ended up with this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Beko-White-Slot-Toaster-TAM4341/dp/B07SHV62PX/ref=ascdff_B07SHV62PX/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309920218458&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3892580569999859080&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045939&hvtargid=pla-770870036786&psc=1
It toasts really evenly in all slots (the holy grail!!) but it is slow, really slow. I guess you can't have everything

IntermittentParps · 27/01/2020 13:40

I love my Dualit one. They often go in the sale in department stores or on discount sites like BrandAlley.

DimplesMcGee · 27/01/2020 13:41

We have a four-slice cheapo from Sainsbury's and it works fine.

When I was little, we used to do toast on toasting forks in front of my grandma's open fire. That was the best toast ever.

Mmmmm I want hot buttered toast now.

BusterGonad · 27/01/2020 13:53

I've got a Phillips, my secret is that I slice each piece of bread in half then toast it, as per usual with every toaster the bread is too effing big for the toaster, as in long. Why can't toasters actually fit one slice of bread? I also buy the same bread brand every time, the white toast is perfect but the wholemeal version can sometimes be a little under done.

FunnysInLaJardin · 27/01/2020 14:01

our Dualit toaster has been going strong since we got married 22 years ago..........and it still toasts brilliantly!

DontCallMeShitley · 27/01/2020 14:06

I just put it on a lower setting and turn it over half way through. It is many years since I had a toaster that toasted both sides evenly. Have settled on value ones for the last couple and they last for years.

I used a cheap Cookworks one the other day from Argos and was surprised at how crunchy the toast was, and almost even on both sides. With all the garbage in mass produced bread these days it doesn't seem to toast well.

RedRosie · 27/01/2020 14:11

Like a previous poster, we have a Dualit four-slot classic toaster. I got it (don't laugh) as a birthday present. I luffs it. Also - many of the parts are replaceable, which is brilliant.

WhatHaveIFound · 27/01/2020 14:17

We opted for a Dualit Lite toaster rather than the classic ones. It has cooked our toast perfectly for 10+ years and I love the bagel button on it too.

AlCalavicci · 27/01/2020 15:26

I don't like toasters , someone came to my house a few months ago and offered me £100 for my very old gas cooker because it has a eye level grill.

Nope not a chance pal Grin
