Chicken Pox has arrived, what do I need?

So my 3 year old has finally got chicken pox, it seems to be pretty mild at the moment but a warm bath has definitely brought a few more out and a couple are at blister stage.

My question is what did you find was best to relieve the itch? There's just me here today so it will have to be an Amazon Prime job as I don't fancy infecting anyone who hasn't had it or has an immunodeficiency.

Also, has anyone had chicken pox as an adult? DP has never had it and is worried it's going to hit him full force!

I’m 47 and have been around 5 children with chicken pox and have never caught it, hopefully you dh will be similar, if you are that worried get him the vaccine

baubled · 27/01/2020 11:16

Oh that's great, I'll let him know about the vaccine, I assumed it would be too late as he's been around DS all weekend!

I think there are a certain number of exposure days that the vaccine is still effective within and after that it can still make the virus milder, so second the suggestion of your DP getting it.

As said above, I agree about keeping the child cool (coolness in itself also reduces itching as well as preventing more spots). I found virasoothe just as good as Poxclin and would apply one or other at every opportunity. Otherwise piriton and paracetamol helped as well, but masses of distraction was the best thing during the daytime - perhaps get a couple of new toys in just in case they are needed.

I hope it’s a mild case and over before long.

Thanks 2020- seems to be mild so far but I just hope he doesn't take after me- I had it 7 times as a child, all mild but clearly too mild to build up the immunity!

Porridge baths as and when needed (several times a day) really helped dd years ago

I really don't think Babdoc was being rude - what do you object to, is it the 'for goodness sake'?! Hmm I took from it that they were being emphatic and trying to be helpful, making an interesting point.

I have nothing to add in terms of chicken pox care, but good luck, hope it doesn't hit you all too bad.

Curious to see if Housewife10 and MzHz are sisters Grin

Definitely virasoothe. My twins were covered in 1000s of spots. Not one scar on them. It’s like a cooling gel that keeps the spots moisturised so they don’t dry up and scar.

Babdoc · 27/01/2020 12:00

OP, I’m struggling to see how you could possibly interpret my post as “rude”?
I’m a retired doctor- my only interest is in trying to spare your child (and those of any other parents who read this) from unnecessary suffering.
If you want to ignore medical advice, crack on, but to accuse a doctor of rudeness when trying to help you is bizarre to say the least!

2020BetterBeBetter · 27/01/2020 12:06

@Babdoc I didn’t read you as being rude either. I do have a quick question for you if you don’t mind - does the number of spots have any relation to how severe the virus is or how unwell the child is? I guess I’m trying to ask how you determine whether it’s a mild case or not!

baubled · 27/01/2020 12:08

Starting a comment with "for goodness sake" comes across rude in my opinion, if that isn't how it was meant then I apologise but it's how I interpreted it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Poxclin! The best stuff ever created. I had chicken pox at the same time as DD and used it on both of us. It completely got rid of the itch and is super easy to apply.
I mentioned on another thread earlier when I had it I felt fluey and very tired for about 3 days.

Eurax Cream, oats tied into a sock in the bath.
