A long weekend in Copenhagen, advice needed please

Hello All

Im looking for recommendations based on personal experience of self catering in Copenhagen. We haven’t been before so any advice is appreciated. We’d like to be central and near to shops and amenities. We would consider a hotel (possibly) but we have a very fussy eater ( aged 8) so self catering would be much better. Finally, we don’t want to spend crazy money on accommodation for the 3 of us ( about £160 per night would be the absolute max). Thanks

Can't help you much with Denmark itself as I live in Norway, but from a general scandi perspective - AirB&B is likely your best bet for decent accomodation. If your family can cope with eating vegetarian for a weekend you'll save a butt ton of money, meat costs a fortune over here :) If you buy beer then do it at the Vinmonopolet as you'll find a better selection for cheaper than at the regular shops.

I've been looking at doing this as well, AirBNB seems to be the best option. There are some lovely places fairly central. When are you thinking of going?

Theres a travel card you can get that can be used on underground/bus/boat etc, really useful. Though if you stay central enough you might not even need that.

Youngatheart00 · 27/01/2020 11:36

I have heard that Copenhagen is lovely but VERY expensive.

Greenglassteacup · 27/01/2020 18:42

Thanks. Avoiding meat is no problem as we’re all vegetarian. Having had a look at accommodation it doesn’t seem
As expensive as Amsterdam or London for self catering in a decent area?

We’d have to go in the ridiculously marked up school holidays unfortunately, thinking over the Easter hols

I’m a bit wary of Airbnb though as have been on the receiving end of a very last minute cancellation by host before, leaving us in deep shit

Also beer not an issue as neither of us drinks ( rock & roll!!)

Hi. We went a few years back and stayed at Urban House Hostel. Brilliant place behind the main train station. A real mix of people and families (we had a lovely family room with en-suite) and there’s even a kitchen area if you want to prep food. Copenhagen is expensive but a few nights we just picked up food to take back to the hostel for dinner and then sat and ate in the communal areas. The kids loved it!

Greenglassteacup · 27/01/2020 19:00

Thanks for sharing your experience. The idea of communal living / hostel isn’t appealing at all - We’d want something completely self contained. We both have very peopley jobs so aren’t looking for socialising with other families etc. Maybe I’ll have to risk air bnb again.

We stayed at the Adina aparthotel which isn't enormously central but is a 15 minute bus ride to the centre. Like a hotel room with a kitchen and there are a couple of restaurants and a supermarket right outside. It also has an indoor pool which we had to ourselves.

Greenglassteacup · 27/01/2020 19:15

Will have a look, thanks

Anyone stayed v central in self contained accommodation?

There’s a new metro ring system in Copenhagen that means getting around is super quick, so don’t limit your search to the central area. If you stay in Frederikshavn you’re next to the zoo and the beautiful gardens, but still only 10 mins from Nyhavn (the place on all the postcards). I’d try Air B&B, danes are on the whole super honest and straitforward.

MrsAmaro · 27/01/2020 19:17

I’ve got a good deal here www.booking.com/Share-VI9arb5 over Easter. Is on the yellow metro line to airport and city centre. Hoping the kitchenette will help save some money on breakfast and lunches!

Lampan · 27/01/2020 19:29

@MooMinCow you beat me to it! I came on here to say Urban House, though I have also just seen that OP doesn’t want a hostel. When we stayed there though it was easy to keep to ourselves...
On a separate note, we struggled to find vegetarian food in a lot of places, though there are some really excellent vegan restaurants!
Copenhagen is absolutely fabulous, do a free walking tour if you can.
It’s also true that it’s by far the most expensive city I have ever visited, but worth it. There was an amazing food hall (Papieroen) which has closed but was meant to be moving elsewhere, see if it still exists as it was great for fussy eaters as everyone can get what they like, plus it’s cheaper than a restaurant.

MooMinCow · 27/01/2020 19:42

Hi Lampan. Yes it’s big enough that you can keep to yourselves but still a cosy atmosphere that you can chat to people if you want. DH and I loved the bar too Wink

We also went to Papieroen for the street food - a good choice as lots of options.

Would also recommend a trip to the aquarium on the way back to the airport. We enjoyed that far more than Tivoli Garden!

Greenglassteacup · 27/01/2020 19:43

Thanks all, will look into all of your recommendations tonight

Have a look on here for other threads about Copenhagen. There have been a few recently with excellent advice.

Herocomplex · 27/01/2020 19:50

The street food is now at Reffen, it’s closed over the winter, open again in April.

MamaDane · 27/01/2020 19:59

Meat is not expensive if you like pork! 🐖

Greenglassteacup · 27/01/2020 20:01

Ugh no thanks!

Consider buying the copenhagen card it covers all transport including to and from the airport most museum entrances and some less intellectual stuff like the zoo. ( there are giant pandas)the bus tour and boat tour where you can see the very little mermaid
Under 9 goes free so you only need adult cards, it's not cheap but all the little bits ad up.
You can pick the card up at the airport the desk is well signposted

SixStringFanjo · 27/01/2020 22:02

The Citymapper app works for Copenhagen as well, if you go for the Copenhagen Card. Saved a ton of time travelling around on public transport and took all the uncertainty out of which bus/metro/train to get.

Starisnotanumber · 27/01/2020 22:02

Copenhagen card also covers entrance to Tivoli Gardens if its open when you are there doesn't cover the rides though but you can get a rides card as an extra
