If you have a long haired cat...

..and also a lovely sparkling clean house, please share with me your daily routine Grin

I have 2 fluffy hair balls and the hair is getting me down a bit. Don't get me wrong, I love them both and wouldn't be without them. They're part of the family and are sweet cuddly funny and we all love them. But it's a daily struggle, I hoover the sofa daily, brush them daily and generally clean daily but it's never ending 😅

I just want a fresh and airy clean home, is that impossible? --Please say it's possible

I was thinking that when it warms up I'm going to give the sofa covers a wash and air, then put some large throws on them (if I can find some for a corner sofa) so that I'll still be able Hoover daily but can also easily remove for a wash.

Is there anything else I can do?
What do you do?

Thanks for reading, and for any advice!

I have one out of two!
Theoretically the floors get done alternate days, in reality it's twice a week. The main room furniture gets a wipe once a week, bedding is shaken when making beds, and other items get a clothes brush over them as and when needed. Weekly dusting/ cleaning knocks the rest to the floor to vaccum up.
My solution is to traipse hay and horse bedding everywhere, have a short haired cat that tramples mud in, and own teenagers. They make the odd bit of cat hair barely noticeable by comparison.

Main Coons and a double coated dog here...
Sweep the floors most days and learn to live with the rest :D

TheGnusShoes · 26/01/2020 21:33

😂 thank you, I have a 5 yo (who seems to be going on 15) who likes to leave a mess wherever he goes so that might be the most realistic answer!

I had Three Persians All at once
I don’t remember anything excessive
They got brushed on a regular basis.

Oh.. do I have to just accept my fate? 😭

Brush them often, get a furminator for the summer and brush them with it outside.
Get a good hoover. I have a shark, picks up so much fur!
Other than that get used to it.

Damntheman · 28/01/2020 09:27

I also have one of the two! Honestly I have learned to not be bothered by it as much.

I will do a deep clean when I know I have a mildly allergic friend coming over, but otherwise it's just deal with the worst of it and let live. One of my fluff balls seems to be part squid as he'll respond to being startled by dropping what appears to be half of his fur. Sadly he's very easily startled..

I have a long haired cat! I have a leather sofa so that’s ok with regards to getting hairy. I hoover every other day and sweep also. I’ve got a hetty hoover it’s fab at getting up all the hairs. We have wooden flooring downstairs and sometimes we have little tumbleweed type balls of fluff on the floors Grin

MaudesMum · 28/01/2020 10:52

I have a long haired cat, acquired as an adult, who doesn't like being brushed. That leads to epic amounts of fur. I've bought a second cordless wand-type vacuum cleaner which is mainly used to hunt down fur and the catlitter she randomly scatters throughout the house. I sob when the sun comes out and reveals fluff tumbleweed in places I hadn't previously noticed it. While I wouldn't be without her, I'm definitely sticking to short haired cats in future...

VenusClapTrap · 28/01/2020 11:18

Brush the cats daily. I used to know someone who hoovered his cat - and it seemed to quite enjoy it, weirdly.

If they don’t like being brushed, try different types of brushes. I had one who would only tolerate a zoom groom; she wouldn’t entertain the metal toothed variety.

My parents used to comb our childhood cat with a hacksaw blade. He loved it.

Sherloidbaisherloid · 28/01/2020 11:26

I have a glove with bristles on which he seems to enjoy much more than a normal brush. It protects your hand too if they try and swipe you!

Iwantacookie · 28/01/2020 11:34

My long haired cat never seems to leave any hair.
The short haired one though Hmm you can see the hair flying off when hes walking

Doobigetta · 28/01/2020 13:27

Mine doesn’t like using a litter tray and waits until she can go outside most of the time, so I’m lucky that we don’t get those smells.
She only has wet food once a day, and it only stays down for a couple of hours. If she hasn’t finished it by then it goes in the bin. She has dry food available all the time but it doesn’t smell as much.
Hard floors mean fur is easier to clear up but it still happens.
In general, not cat-related, we crack windows open whenever possible so the air is fresh.
Honestly though, I think it’s luck of the draw. My current cat is a scratcher, which is annoying but not smelly. But my old boy was as good as gold about scratching, but regularly peed on carpets, furniture, electrical appliances...

Hairy dog here rather than cat.

  • Thoroughly groom daily
  • Hoover at least once, if not two or three times a day
  • keep fabric to a minimum; lots of leather, hardwood etc
LilyJade · 28/01/2020 14:14

My fluffy rescue cat won't let me groom her!!!
She sheds her black & white fur everywhere!!
I have a Miele pet hair vacuum cleaner & use it regularly.
Also wiping the sofa, bedding, & rug with a damp cloth gets the fur off but it's hard work!
Here's a pic.

We have a Persian who goes to a groomers every six weeks for a wash and trim. He loves it and is so much more comfortable afterwards. It keeps him clean and minimises (doesn't solve) the excessive hair problem. Depending on the breed/temperament might be worth looking in to? Took us a while to find somebody with breed experience but she's great with him and he genuinely loves having a bath and a blow dry now.

LilyJade · 28/01/2020 14:25

Unfortunately Ebony is extremely nervous so being groomed is terrifying for her

NCasIknowMNetters · 28/01/2020 15:30

I love how huge dust/fluff balls gather in every single corner of the house (tiles/wooden floors) every day no matter how much I sweep. I'm sure there's more than the weight of an average cat each day. Maybe socks are reincarnated as fluff?

Not helping - 3 long haired humans also living there. My poor vacuum cleaner!

TrainspottingWelsh · 28/01/2020 20:06

If I tried grooming one of mine the result would be cat hair covered in my blood. It's the act, rather than the tool she objects to.

Have to say I find carpeted rooms the easiest to clean, the hair generally sticks to it so it's easy to vacuum up, in hard floor rooms it tends to float around the floor and stick to furnishings more.
