Life insurance thoughts...

We are both 50. Dh kids have finished Uni but aren’t settled yet.

We earn a decent amount. Just taking on a 250k mortgage between us to pay off in 10 years.

My thoughts are we should take out £250k worth of insurance for 10 years till house paid off. That Would be about £50 a month.

I have death in service cover of about £100k, he has about £50k worth of insurance.

if he popped his clogs, his kids wouldn’t get v much as I’d be sitting in the house in trust which is his main asset. I’d be ok paying mortgage on own but it would be tight.

He seens reluctant to engage on the life insurance and not sure of the benefit....he’s normally fairly savvy.

Could it simply be he doesn’t want to think about dying?

I'm a widow. Ask him why the fuck he would want to make life harder for the surviving person. My husband was uninsurable due to his illness (we tried specialist providers but no go, clearly for good reason). I went back to work 2 months after losing my husband traumatically, there was an element of choice in that but I knew I could not afford not to work. I couldn't sustain full time working and in fact am still part time 2 years later. I pay for therapy, so far that's cost about £8k in two years but it makes life less insane and lets me keep going.

Bereavement is a tornado. Money makes the tornado a lot easier to survive. Tell him to pull his finger the fuck out and stop being a baby.

@PermanentTemporary I’m sorry for your loss.

My mum was widowed young and we’d have been screwed without dads generous insurance payout. He’s not had that experience...I hadn’t thought about the fact he’s not lived that where as I have.

I think I’ll just go ahead and arrange it.

My husband died aged 50. He'd been unwell since 38 but had life insurance I place before that. I have had no money worries since he died 8 years ago and could afford to retire. I'm actually surprised your lender didn't suggest it. We also had permanent health insurance so had a good income when he couldn't work. I also have critical illness insurance. It all costs but the earlier you take it out the better.

Oh yes that makes sense- youve known from early years what a difference life insurance makes, he hasn't.
