T1 Diabetic and I can't take it anymore

It was just about manageable before I had a kid but for the last three years I have been suffering from one low-level infection after another: on my feet, colds/flus, thrush - just constantly, one after the other, plus general fatigue that just absolutely floors me and background retinopathy. A cold will knock me out for a minimum of 3 weeks.

My sugar levels aren't terrible and I'm trying to control them as best I can - I don't drink or smoke, I'm trying to eat better, I don't go to sleep late, I try and go to the gym when I can - but after the baby my immune system is just shot to shit (and all the extra insulin has just made me put on weight which I'm finding particularly galling as I'm trying to cut back on carbs).

I'm sitting here in absolute tears after yet another bout of thrush and I have no one to turn to who really understands so I'm hoping someone here will. I know there are worse illnesses out there but it's impacting my work, my parenting, my social life, everything. Plus I'm having to accept that if this is how I'm feeling after just one kid I'll never be able to have another.

I just really feel life isn't worth living like this. (I'm not a danger to myself, don't worry, just feeling like I'm at rock bottom).

I’m sorry I wasn’t saying any of that stuff. I was trying to help as I low a little in this area.

Won’t bother next time

Changeembrace · 27/01/2020 09:52

And once again in your follow up - looking to complain

Jellybeansincognito · 27/01/2020 10:08

@Changeembrace you should probably take your own advice.
Sniping at me for complaining when that is literally the only thing you are doing here.
I’ve added comments to support OP, the other poster is not supporting OP, as much as she thinks she is.
Neither are you, asking OP what her diet looks like.
She doesn’t have to be ‘honest’ about that since she’ll have to document and analyse everything she is eating to begin with.

Op needs support, and thankfully the majority of this thread gives her that.

Now, on your way since you don’t like complaining (you absolute hypocrite).

Brew That’s what’s you need!

Anaemia can be a reason for repeated thrush infections and being coeliac can be a cause for the anaemia so I would also suggest blood tests for coeliac and autoimmune thyroid disease (get antibodies checked as well as TSH, T3/4).

Jellybeansincognito · 27/01/2020 11:29

Not just a hypocrite then. You can add patronising to your list @Changeembrace.

Do you feel better about yourself now?

Besidesthepoint · 27/01/2020 13:12

I have been in a dire state with a heart issue and been very low and getting these things right helped the issue I had - hugely.*

But your heart still works. When you have T1 the pancreas doesn't produce insulin and living better or eating a better diet won't make it produce insulin, thats the whole point of being T1. At the very best the best control you can get is still miles away from the stability a healthy person has.

Wine perhaps better for you!

Hi Sugarcoma I am the mother of a Type 1 diabetic (he's 21 diagnosed at 6years old) and I wanted to give you a virtual hug.
Type 1 is a total bugger of a disease it never goes away and it never gives you a minute's peace and just when you think you've got everything sorted something else goes wrong.
I take my hat off to you coping with that and having a young child. Be kind to yourself. And maybe accept that changing things will take some time.ThanksThanksThanksThanksThanksThanksThanksThanksThanks
