Book suggestions for a 5 year old

DD is nearly 5, not reading herself yet but she loves a bedtime story. We've just about finished the first in the Enchanted Wood/Faraway Tree stories by Enid Blyton. I loved these as a kid so I'm enjoying revisiting them.

I was thinking about what else we could branch out into. Aside from maybe The Wishing Chair, The Naughtiest Girl etc from Enid Blyton, maybe some of the shorter Roald Dahl stories?

Are there any other authors that are good for that age group? I'm thinking David Walliams/Jacqueline Wilson etc might be a bit old for her just now.

The worst witch?

The Ottoline series and Once upon a Wild Wood both by Chris Riddell.
Pippi Longstocking.
Some of Dahl - Fantastic Mr Fox, George's Marvellous medicine etc

Winnie the Pooh has good chapters that are perfect bedtime story length.

Also dr Seuss if you're into rhyming. The places you'll go is excellent.

One of my favourites at that age was Grimms or Anderson's fairy tails or Roald Dahl revolting rhymes, although anything Roald Dahl could work.

Winnie the witch stories are great, there are several picture books, and then some chapter books.

Secret Surprises not Surprised!

My wee girl is the same age. She loved My Naughty Little Sister and some of the shorter Dahl books. She also loves the Amelia Jane stories from Enid Blyton.
Currently working our way through a series called Fairy Unicorns too.

Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf

We have just read the Christmasaurus by Tom Fletcher which was fab - DD is nearly 7 and it's the first proper chapter book we have read.
There are absolutely amazing shorter books though which we enjoy together, especially now DD can start reading with me too.

Anna Hibiscus
My Naughty Little Sister, or Iggy & Me (which I think is the modern day equivalent!)
Worst Witch
Mr Majeika
Jolley Rogers

Anything by Alison Uttley. I always loved her Little Grey Rabbit stories and she has a book of quite charming Christmas Stories.

Lots of great ideas, thank you. I'd forgotten about Amelia Jane and the Worst Witch. I don't know most of the rest of them but I'll certainly investigate. She has a library card she's desperate to use.

My 5 year old loves The Worst Witch and also enjoyed Ramona. I tried The Sheep Pig but he wasn't interested.

Dd is 5 and loves the princess in black series bu shannon and dean hale. I started reading them to her, then reading them with her and now she reads by herself. Also the Usbourne apple tree farm books are good for gradually independent reading.

She also loves swalshbuckle lil, clever polly and the stupid wolf, pippi longstocking and the village dinosaur. Hates Ronald Dahl apart from Matilda and Danny the champion.

The Little Gem books are a big hit with DS - they are a range of short chapter books which still have some illustrations in. Some of them are by Julia Donaldson (e.g. the snake who came to stay) but there loads of other authors too. A search for 'little gems' finds them in the online catalogue for my local library.
