Do I need 6 months on my passport to travel

We are going on holiday mid February and I have just realised our passports expire end of may!

Will we just not be allowed on the flight?

Where are you going?
In Europe it shouldn’t matter, although since Brexit that’s not as clear as it was. I’ve travelled within Europe with literally days left on my passport but now I probably wouldn’t risk it
In your shoes I think I would try and renew if at all possible

tallulahhulah1 · 25/01/2020 07:40

Your passport won't be valid. You need at least 6 months and you would be short of that

To double check here is the official check on the gov document www.gov.uk/check-a-passport-for-travel-to-europe

Fingernail · 25/01/2020 07:41

Egypt! Aaaaargh! It’s mine and 2 kids. Have just read you can’t do kids renewals by emergency appointment??

OP posts:
Fingernail · 25/01/2020 07:43

Why is it like this???? Surely if it’s ‘valid until’ then it should be valid until that date?? Sob

If we leave with a withdrawal agreement, there will be a transition period until end of December 2020. You’ll only need6 months validity after this. Withdrawal agreement is expected to be signed by European Council next week.

Farahilda · 25/01/2020 07:44

Where are you going, OP?

UK is leaving with a deal, so for EU (plus Norway and Switzerland) you need validity only for proposed duration of stay.

Under the deal, this remains the case until December 2020.

(And it may last longer, if this is uncontroversial enough to get a new agreement in the early transition months)

tallulahhulah1 · 25/01/2020 07:45

Wait You said Europe, Egypt is in Africa. Double check the gov website as there are separate restrictions considering there is warnings about going there at the moment.

Fingernail · 25/01/2020 07:45

Egypt

ignore me

That advice is about travelling in Europe, just read it in another thread.

Fingernail · 25/01/2020 07:46

@tallulahhulah1 I didn’t say Europe!

OP posts:
tallulahhulah1 · 25/01/2020 07:48

I apologise I got confused as someone else said Europe. My bad - too early haha

But now your said Egypt it might not be too bad. Just check about coming back into the UK.

WhispersOfWickedness · 25/01/2020 07:49

Mid feb is three weeks away, plenty of time to get new passports!

Farahilda · 25/01/2020 07:50

Sorry, slow typing meant I had not seen the update

Yes, I'm afraid it is 6 months validity for Egypt. Too late for you OP, but it is always worth checking FCO travel advice pages about visa and passport validity requirements either before you book or immediately afterwards so you have time to get the admin in order.

It is quite possible you will not be allowed to board.

So bang in your renewal now, using the one week fast track service. You should still be OK

Fingernail · 25/01/2020 07:50

Gov.uk says 6 months for Egypt

Has anyone got experience though? If we have return tickets? will we literally just not be allowed to go?

OP posts:
EugenesAxe · 25/01/2020 07:53

I’ve always found the normal service to be quite quick, so I’d say sort out renewals today and get them sent off. Don’t make a mistake Wink Using online renewal form would make this less likely.

You could always try calling if you haven’t had them a week before to see if they can be hurried along? Or do yours as urgent and hope the children get bundled along with yours?

Farahilda · 25/01/2020 07:54

"will we literally just not be allowed to go?"

Quite possibly - either the airline will not let you in the plane, it you will not be permitted to enter the country on arrival, and will have to stay airside and arrange your own passage back. The airline who brought you could be fined (which is why they are unlikely to let you on) and all expenses arising from incorrect documentation are excluded from travel insurance.

LesLavandes · 25/01/2020 07:58

Get all renewed via post office. You will get back in a couple of weeks

dementedpixie · 25/01/2020 08:01

Child renewals can be done on 1 week fast track.

dementedpixie · 25/01/2020 08:03

Its Egypt that sets their entry requirements. If they say 6 months remaining then that's what you need. 1 week fast track is the fastest way for a child renewal

www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently

Hels20 · 25/01/2020 08:03

You’ve got time. You won’t be able to travel. I have renewed children’s on far track - handed in on a Monday, returned on Friday

Fingernail · 25/01/2020 08:08

I’ve just checked the passports again as I can’t believe I missed it

MINE is valid until 2025 (which is how I missed it!) DD1 is valid to June and dd2 until may; so they will have 4 and 3 months respectively

Shall we wing it???

OP posts:
Sicario · 25/01/2020 08:09

You will be turned away.

HeronLanyon · 25/01/2020 08:11

No! Don’t wing it.

AuntieMarys · 25/01/2020 08:11

Why would you wing it???

dementedpixie · 25/01/2020 08:11

No dont wing it. If they ask for 6 months then that's what you need. Do you want them turned away at the start of the holiday?
