About 6 weeks pregnant and so sensitive to smell- anyone else?

This is my fourth pregnancy and I've never had this! I don't know how I'm going to be able to keep it to myself much longer Envy

I've not been sick yet but today at work someone had strawberries and honestly, I could feel myself going green. It's horrible :(

Has anyone else had similar? Did it turn into full blown sickness?

My dd are now grown up but I became really sensitive to smells both times. In fact that’s what made me suspect I was pregnant the second time. I also had horrible sickness, worse with number 2. Doesn’t mean you’ll be the same though.

I'm six weeks and some smells are repulsing me. I have an air freshener in my downstairs bathroom and I've been avoiding going in due to the smell of it!

Willow4987 · 23/01/2020 17:45

I had this and the worst of it was that my DS was still weaning and even the smell of him covered in food used to make me go green...glad it’s passed now

I did, coffee turned my stomach for a week or so before I found out I was pregnant. I was rarely sick during the pregnancy though- in fact I was sick more during labour than in the 9 months before!

Agathette · 23/01/2020 18:39

Yes, coffee is another one that makes me feel as though my stomach is turning inside out!

I really hope this doesn't last until weaning Shock

I had it with both of mine. I also had horrible morning and afternoon and evening sickness. I sit next to a colleague who drinks really strong coffee and it made me want to throw up every day when I was pregnant.

Agathette · 23/01/2020 18:44

I can't decide if actually being sick would be a relief from this nausea. I sit in the staff room at lunch time like someone on a particularly rough ferry crossing!

Yes I'm 11 weeks pregnant with my 4th and I cant remember it being this bad before. The smell of soap, washing powder, perfume ect makes me feel so sick and actually makes my skin crawl I've had to get rid of some stuff from home as I just cant stand it.

DonnaDarko · 23/01/2020 18:55

I was really sensitive to the smell of dove handwash when I was pregnant over 3 years ago. Even now, I can't use it.

Pimmsypimms · 23/01/2020 18:58

I had this. I couldn't stand the smell of strawberry milkshake or peppermint. I was so, so sick for about 4 months, physically sick twice a day, but the feeling of nausea was pretty much constant for those months.
Bizarrely, I had a pair of pink converse and a yellow T-shirt that I wore in the first trimester and I had to chuck them out when I'd had my dd as the association between the sickness and those items of clothing was so strong that I couldn't bear to wear them. That was 15 years ago and I still get that feeling thinking about them now!

RhymingRabbit3 · 23/01/2020 19:15

Oh I remember this. When i was about 8 weeks someone at work had microwave fish pie for lunch in the staff room microwave Envy

Willow4987 · 23/01/2020 20:08

@Agathette Grin no mine didn’t - I was weaning DS1 while pregnant with DS2

SpeedofaSloth · 23/01/2020 20:09

Yes, in all four pregnancies.

vampirethriller · 23/01/2020 20:18

I could smell people's hair really strongly. They didn't even have to be close to me. I could smell the warm skin and hair and it was awful. I couldn't stand the smell of meat either.

chocolate26 · 23/01/2020 20:37

My sense of smell was so bad I chucked my sofa away because I thought it smelt awful 😂 I couldn't even look at it without being sick!

Agathette · 23/01/2020 20:41

Peppermint and other 'sharp' things are fine, and actually seem to calm it.

As for the microwaved fish pie- my stomach lurched just reading that!

I couldn’t bear the smell of anything fragranced like candles, shower gel or shampoo. In fact, I couldn’t set foot in a hair dressers without throwing up. The smell of red wine was appalling too. Supermarkets were a nightmare.

Honestly, I’d do labour twice to skip the first trimester.

DimplesMcGee · 23/01/2020 21:06

Oh God, I was just like this. The smell of the fridge was the worst. I didn’t have any trouble with food prep but DH had to go into the fridge to get anything I needed for dinner out, or I’d be sick. I remember how strong perfume smelled on other people. I once had to leave an important business meeting because of the smell of the catered sandwiches left on the side after the working lunch...

I read it is your body’s way to ensure you don’t eat anything harmful to the baby (ie anything a bit off or rotten)... but I’m not sure that can be true because then surely most women would develop a keener sense of smell when pregnant?

Anyway, it did get better once I’d had DC, but my sense of smell is still much keener than it was pre-baby.

DimplesMcGee · 23/01/2020 21:07

Yes, supermarkets too! I’d forgotten that.... I was throwing up two to three times a day, mainly just from smells.

Iambloodystarving · 23/01/2020 21:10

I could not go into supermarkets. Other people were overwhelming, could not hug or kiss or be near them when they took off coats etc.

One thing I loved ? The cheese counter! Grin

Bezalelle · 23/01/2020 22:10

Me!

I'm 8 weeks, and yesterday there was a woman eating a sloppy hamburger on the bus. Smelled like an abattoir EnvyConfusedAngry

user1019273703 · 23/01/2020 22:13

I had it with mine. Somebody fetched fish for dinner thought I was going to pass out it stank!

Wilmalovescake · 23/01/2020 22:13

Oh god it was awful. I couldn’t even wear make up because it smelled so strong.
If you can find anything that doesn’t make your stomach turn- lemon? Lime? Ginger? Mint? Vicks? Carry it around.

TheCunkOfPhilomena · 23/01/2020 22:52

Yes, it was like a weird and horrible super power.

I could smell the soil in the garden if the windows were open, I couldn't face anything perfumed and had really bad nausea with it.

Even now the smell of Bio-Oil makes my stomach turn.

It will pass, but I do get it in the run up to AF now sometimes.
