Show me your kids 'Chores List'

None of us can agree on a reasonable list of Chores for DD14 and DS12. DH thinks they do fuck all, and I agree that they need to do more, but probably not as much as he does.

I have just made a sort of 'rota' that pretty much comes down to:

Make beds (every day)
Put wash on (once a week each)
Walk dog (once a week each)
15 Min general tidy (once week each)
Tidy room properly (once week each)
Load and Unload dishwasher (alternate days)

Thinking of adding
Clean bathroom (about 20 mins) once a week alternated with Sweep (very small paved) front garden

Too much?
Too little?

I'd break it down into days. How long for each task daily?

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 23/01/2020 13:41

I need to get on top of my lot too.
Only thing I’m consistent on is dishwasher

PearTreeParty · 23/01/2020 13:45

@Sleepingboy I have. It's a table with days of the week, but I was just sharing topline info to see if you think it's fair.

I reckon it's a total of 30 mins tops per day each most days
And a bit more once a week for the room tidy and dog walk....

Good list OP and agree allocating days could help.
I also need to get on this with DD, my problem is being consistent.
I'd add setting table for every meal we eat together and stripping own beds ready for sheet change too.

You're right the balance is important - whilst we don't want mini domestic helpers it's important all parties recognise that we all help the home to run smoothly Wink

Apologies, cross posted

My DC are primary age, but they do the following:

  • Lay table most nights
  • Empty dishwasher most mornings
  • Help clear table
  • Clean their lunch boxes
  • Prepare their lunchboxes
  • Repatriate their clothing to drawers
  • Hoover breakfast crumbs when asked
  • Feed cat when asked
  • Tidy bedroom and play area properly weekly before cleaner comes
  • Tidy play area as asked

As the age of yours I think bathroom cleaning and sweeping would be fine.

PearTreeParty · 23/01/2020 14:54

Thank you @Pollaidh

I'm struggling to agree with DH what is fair. He'd practically have them up the chimneys (because at their age he was helping his mum run a cafe after school and doing two paper rounds etc etc).

So I am trying to find the balance between

"God mum you're so out of order, literally NOBODY else has to do this"

and

"Mum can you pass me that cup of tea and make me a snack whilst i lie here with my headphones on watching my ipad but also commandeering the tv"

Confused

I have dc the same ages as yours. Mine are expected to:
Put their dirty clothes in the washing basket
Put their clean clothes away
Keep bedroom tidy (or at least do a big tidy up when asked)
Dust and hoover bedroom once a week
Strip bed and remake it once a fortnight
Help tidy up after dinner (load dishwasher, sweep floor, wipe surfaces, wash up)

Also adhoc things like popping to the shop, getting stuff out of freezer (in the basement), keeping an eye on little two dc when asked, tidying up communal areas etc

I don’t think it’s a lot but they still moan
