Dentist or doctor?

I have a lump on my gum and I'm not sure if I need a dentist or doctor (or nobody).

For background info I have been struggling with pain in an area of my gum and teeth for the past 2 years, the pain seems to flair up and then subside for a few months. This pain spreads all over the side of my face and into my nose.

When the pain flairs up I have seen the dentist and been xrayed and they have not seen anything untoward. I have also been to the Dr who has said it is probably sinusitis and has suggested nasal rinses, prescribed nasal spray and at one time antibiotics.

Just before Christmas I noticed an enlarged lymph node behind my ear which was investigated in hospital due to a history of melanoma. It was all deemed to be fine and a natural response to my body fighting something. (not sure if this is at all relevant but thought I'd add it)

Now for 3 weeks I have had a lump in my gum above where the gum pain occurs. The lump isn't painful but is very red and I can feel tender tubes (sinuses?) above the lump. I have googled this and dental abscess comes up and to visit the dentist.

My questions are...
Would an abscess be more painful to touch?
Should I see the dentist or is it another waste of everyone's time?
Should I see the doctor (is it sinus related)?
Should I leave it if there's no pain?
I just don't know what to do but am concerned at the possibility of it being an abscess and my teeth falling out Smile

Thanks for reading this far.

If it helps, I had an abscess last year and it wasn't especially painful. I think they can be agonising, but aren't necessarily so.

Dentist.

Why would you see a Dr?

You need to go to a dentist. If you think you have a dental abscess ffs. Anything in the mouth is dentist

It could be a draining sinus, which is where an abscess is draining.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 23/01/2020 09:30

A draining sinus is unrelated to your facial sinuses btw. They just have the same name

Whilst a sinus infection can cause dental pain, they won't cause a red lump in your mouth.

Any lumps/bumps abnormalities in the mouth are dentist. It might not be an abcsess but the dentist will know more what it's likely to be.

Thanks everyone. I'll make a dentist appointment and get it checked.

@DishRanAwayWithTheSpoonthe the reason why I considered a Dr was because the dentist had not seen any sign of an abscess on previous xrays. As there is no pain I questioned if this would be an abscess and even worth anybody seeing it as I don't want to waste anybodys time.

@DishRanAwayWithTheSpoonthe I think you're spot on with the draining sinus... I'm off to rinse salty water around and I'm seeing the dentist next week Grin

Probably because the infection is draining there won't be a big area evident on the x ray. It can take a while for it to be evident.

Glad your off to the dentist! Hope you get it sorted Smile
