Does anyone else react to noise like this?

Noise has always bothered me greatly.

If I'm in a group of friends and we're all chatting, if an alarm is going off in the distance or someone is tapping, or something is banging in the background, I can't concentrate on conversations until it stops.

If I'm driving and one of the kids is playing with a toy which is making a ticking or slight banging noise it's almost painful to listen to. I have an actual physical response to it, it's as though someone is stabbing pins in the back of my head. Or it's a very similar feeling to someone pulling hairs out the back of my neck, one by one.

It's really really stressful.

I can't sit in a room with a ticking clock, the stress is similar to getting into a small car crash.

I've had it all my life.

Does anyone else get this??

Yes, plus other sounds!
Misophonia Sad

Seaandsand83 · 22/01/2020 18:27

Eating sounds and fiddling sounds are just the worst. I'm constantly firing looks at my DH when he's eating or putti g my hand out to take whatever he's tapping off him. He's a lucky man Grin

Celticdawn5 · 22/01/2020 18:30

I can’t stand a ticking clock either and keyboard tapping makes me murderous

SpeedofaSloth · 22/01/2020 18:31

Yes.

PhilomenaChristmasPie · 22/01/2020 18:32

I'm autistic and I react to noise like this.

Hoohaahoo · 22/01/2020 18:32

I have adhd and am very easily distracted by noises. They give me sensory overload.

worriedandannoyed · 22/01/2020 18:34

Yes yes yes! This is me!

Too many sources of sound at once means I just want to run away. Repetitive noises have the same effect.

I had no idea it was misophonia!

Stravapalava · 22/01/2020 18:34

My DH is the same as you with general noise and finding it difficult to concentrate. He also hates the DC screaming and shouting as it goes right through him, but he's fine with eating noise etc.

I'm ok with general noise and can tune stuff out / let the DC run around screaming but eating / mouth / breathing noises really piss me off.

TheNoiseHurts · 22/01/2020 18:37

Repetitive noises are stressful for me too.

I thought misophonia was when people eat? I also have that though, I must admit.

Yes absolutely I agree with everything you say. My husband says I can hear the grass grow - but it's not about super hearing it's more about the lack of tolerance to any noise - I also cringe at people who speak loudly Confused

TheNoiseHurts · 22/01/2020 18:39

Just googled its definitely misophonia.

I wrongly thought that was purely people who didn't like the noise of others eating!

I didn't expect to get an answer that quickly or have so many people that have the same!

For me a good example is sitting in the living room watching telly when the dishwasher is on in the kitchen. I keep the kitchen door shut as I can’t ‘hear’ the telly over the dishwasher otherwise. It isn’t that it is too loud, only that it is too distracting. So if someone goes into the kitchen then leaves the door open, I have a moan and then go to close it if the culprit won’t. DH thinks I am bonkers, he can’t see the low sound affects my being able to hear the telly, and I know what he means.

Is that the kind of thing you mean?

HunterAngel · 22/01/2020 18:49

Repetitive noises really bother me! Can’t stand ticking clocks, tapping or that weird vibration noise that only seems to happen at night.

BeautifulBirds · 22/01/2020 18:53

Mum suffers terribly with this. She has been given hearing aids by the hospital which cancel out back ground noise and its been a life changer.

She first noticed it while being diagnosed with prenisous anemia (sp?). Over time it got worse, she consulted the GP who referred her to hospital and they diagnosed the issue.

DaveMinion · 22/01/2020 18:55

Yes I have adhd and Aspergers and a plethora of other sensory issues.

movingonbackwards · 22/01/2020 18:58

I'm the same. I get fixated on sounds then it's all I can hear. It can happen to me with songs etc too, I hear one instrument or beat etc then that's all I can hear. I'm doing a language course at the min and the teacher suggested YouTube videos but the whole video has a repetitive backing track and I can't listen to it. It then plays on a loop in my head 🤦🏼‍♀️

Hovverry · 22/01/2020 19:00

I can’t bear loud noises of any kind. My dog barks at every sound, many of which I cannot actually hear and his explosive barking is driving me insane.

iusedtobecool · 22/01/2020 19:04

I have strong reactions distant chatter, if anyone nearby is having a party or gathering with lots of people, especially in the evening, I start to get panicky, heart thumping, feel sick, even suicidal because it’s so hard and exhausting to deal with.

I can’t do anything about it - apart move to my own island! No-one else in my family are bothered about it like I am . I don’t like ‘people’ noise if it’s unfamiliar if that makes any sense!. I have young kids who can be noisy so realise I’m a hypocrite! I’ve tried hypnotherapy, counselling, but nothing helped so far. Wish it didn’t bother me so much.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 22/01/2020 19:04

It worse as once you hear it it seems to get louder and louder.

DickAmbush · 22/01/2020 19:09

I have hyperacusis, caused by hearing damage. Certain noises cause me immense physical pain.

CareyFairy · 22/01/2020 19:11

Sensory Processing Disorder maybe?
Difficulty filtering out noises so everything tends to be heard at the same level.

eandz13 · 22/01/2020 19:14

Yes! I've never actually looked into it so these comments are interesting, but yeah, multiple noises at once, or loud/repetitive noises give me very bad anxiety and make me feel tense and jittery. I'm turning to google now... I just thought it normal

BackforGood · 22/01/2020 19:14

NHS Information

Really common for folk who are autistic to be hypersensitive to sound, too.

Oblomov20 · 22/01/2020 19:22

Yes. I have over-sensitive hearing. I can hear a text ping, in the field next door. Drives me crazy. Loads of my friends have it too.

It's truely awful.

Wotrewelookinat · 22/01/2020 19:23

Yes my eldest DD. She has to wear noise cancelling headphones a lot as can’t stand eating noises and breathing noises mostly. She can’t cope with the cinema or theatre because of this.
