Civil unrest Cameroon - friend trapped

Singlein2020 · 22/01/2020 18:01

I have a friend "patience" who went to Cameroon to stay with family for christmas. She was due back last Friday.
On Thursday, i got a call from someone who said she was patience's cousin and she was calling on her behalf as pateince's phone had run out of battery and there was no electricity. Patience was due to fly to Uk that day and I was collecting her from the airport on friday. The cousin said she was going to miss her flight as they were trapped in an area and couldn't travel, that there was bombers and killings happening and they weren't safe. They were in a war zone. The cousin said that patience had no money for a new flight. I asked what I could do and she hung up / was cut off.

I have heard nothing from that call.

I have been trying to call both Patience and her cousin but straight to voice mail. I have messaged and emailed.
I have been scouring online to see what I can find out about what is happening but I can see little. I know the airport is still open.
I am really worried about her but don't have contacts for any family she has over there.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can find out what is happening and how I might find out how / where she is?

every article you read maybe either from the state or pro regime who would tell you how they want to present the case to the world, but I have told you that we were a British colony ,after the second world war and the formation of UN,a new resolution by the same UN asked the it's members to grant independent to theirs colonies in Africa,we are bothered with Nigeria Cameroun, considering us as less economically power, Britain did not want to give us full independent, they connived with France and sold us to Cameroun that got independent in the previous year 1960, at that time British administration has left more than three years ago, that is from 1958 to 1961 we were an autonomy state before the UN conducted a plebiscite that did not gave us a chance to gain independent, giving an evil reason that we are too poor to be a country of it's own,to cut a long story short,I have more evidence for what I'm telling you ,if you are interested let me know,

AllideasAndNoAction · 24/01/2020 12:18

thanks Clangus slight hijack here, but do you have to have google set as your home page for that? I am not sure I even have a news feed apart from on Facebook Grin

Do you set MN news to appear as a preference or does it just appear? I'm wondering if you need to at least read MN in order for the algorithms to send it to your feed, or whether it can literally appear on anyone's feed for no specifically targeted reason. Or whether keywords (in this case Cameroon) send it to your feed even if you don't generally read MN?

It's all a bit Big Brother. Confused

AllideasAndNoAction · 24/01/2020 12:22

Hmm, well I don't think the New York Times or Human Rights Watch are necessarily pro or anti the regime Nanaasbu. sorry but I have to disagree with you there. There is plenty out there from organisations with no vested interest either way.

MollyButton · 24/01/2020 12:32

Good for your friend OP!

Those suggesting a scam are not necessarily being racist. I was contacted by a scammer concerning my friend; a retired white lady in Greece, they were saying her bag had been stolen and she needed to get home. I knew it was a scam as she has an extensive family who she would contact way ahead of me!

I just have to share here just 2links that may enlighten you about something
TheSheepofWallSt · 24/01/2020 16:07

This is the weirdest thread I’ve ever read on Mumsnet... whouda thought MN would be a place for in-depth Cameroonian political analysis?!

OP glad your friend is well, and hope she gets home safe

LochJessMonster · 24/01/2020 16:41

What a weird ass thread.

I don't think your average Cameroonian man living in Cameroon and fully up to speed on the political situation there is just by chance knocking around on a British parenting website somehow. agree with this though, this thread took a weird turn half way through,

LochJessMonster · 24/01/2020 16:42

Wait, was this whole thread just so Nanaabsu could publicise the Cameroon conflict? How bizarre.

Footle · 24/01/2020 19:38

The situation in former West Cameroon is almost unreported in the British media, and it's frequently horrifying.

WhereShallWeMoveTo · 24/01/2020 19:47

Just did a quick AV on you Footle to see if you were number 6 of the Cameroon 6.

Nope. You’ve made hundreds of posts over a long time period.

But EVERY SINGLE ONE of them has been deleted for breaking talk guidelines.

This thread is getting seriously weird. Confused

Joliebebe · 24/01/2020 19:49

@AllideasAndNoAction oh wow, what a plan you have uncovered!😂😂I think you should join MI5 with such a skill. Tell me more about what we "5 cameroonians" who have never posted on your "British parent"site( even though some of us are British/cameroonians, and probably parents too) aka mumsnet, called each other to come and make comments on this post hoping to achieve?😂 I read just 2 other comments from people who mentioned they were cameroonians, but then again I haven't gone through every single comment, so they may well be up to 5. @nanaabsu I think you have given enough info about the crisis back home. I know you are hurting and want to scream for the world to hear you, we all are. It is going to be ok sis/ bro? I personally don't like to talk about the crisis because those who have the power to change the situation don't care, why would the rest of the world care? The only reason I mentioned it was for OP to know she wasn't being scammed and her friend was probably trapped in the war zone.

ElloBrian · 24/01/2020 20:29

What a weird thread. Does anyone on here have a view on anything other than Cameroon politics ?!

Footle · 24/01/2020 20:32

@WhereShallWeMoveTo , bollocks to that. I asked for my posts to be deleted after the mass hacking of MN occurred. I then continued to post under another nickname but didn't feel comfortable with it, and asked MNHQ to reinstate Footle as that was the name I was comfortable with.
I have made many many posts since then , none of which have been deleted.
I will report this post and ask MN to verify who I am - one of the oldest ( in age ) posters hereabouts. I've never posted about my African connections before, as it happens, but I couldn't let the ignorance on the thread stand unchallenged.

WhereShallWeMoveTo · 24/01/2020 20:53

How strange, when that happens it usually says ‘message removed at poster’s request.’ Confused

I assumed you were a PBP or a mega troll or spambot! Apologies Flowers

WhereShallWeMoveTo · 24/01/2020 20:56

Footle I’ve just looked again and when you click on the MNHQ message it does indeed say deleted at posters request. Just not when you view it on the search results page. My apologies again.

Footle · 24/01/2020 20:58

Yes, I went so far as to protest to MN that it was a misleading deletion message. That may have been around the time they altered it. I have never looked to see if it was retroactive.

Footle · 24/01/2020 20:59

@WhereShallWeMoveTo , thanks for the apologies. That was a very weird 10 minutes of my life.

WhereShallWeMoveTo · 24/01/2020 21:01

I bet 😂

LouMumsnet · 24/01/2020 21:08

Evening all.

It looks like eveything's sorted now but we're just popping on the thread to confirm that @Footle has indeed been with us donkey's years Wink

As you were.

Nanaabsu · 25/01/2020 04:12

I don't know who's comment to send my reply as a lots of garbage has been posted here, look guys , I'm not a politician and I don't intended to be , it's true that u just registered with this platform,to be honest, this platform is unpopular as the blood of my people is , however I'm happy for Patience's trip to Cameroon that occurred in order to bring both the genocide on my people and this platform, you see , France and Britain are responsible for what is happening in my country, Cameroon got independent on the 1st of January 1960 ,and at that time,we were still under the administration of Britain, until the 1st of October 1961 when our parents decided to form a federal government with Cameroon, these are facts and there are people who voted in that referendum who are still alive,I hate when I hear someone address this crisis, saying THEY ARE FIGHTING TO FORM A STATE CALL AMBAZONIA,we were already a state ,that is why the UN has to asked our parents to form a federal government with either Nigeria or Cameroon, through a referendum which my father and mother participated, you can read what ever from where ever,if it doesn't tell you Cameroon is united country made of French and British colonies,I tell you blatantly it is a lie from conspiracy, it's took Eritrea and south Sudan almost 3 decades to chased their oppressors,we are on the fourth year today with Paul biya, our forces on the ground are getting mature on daily basis,

look how China has kept over a million Uighur Muslims in concentration camps and they don't want anyone to talk about it,look at the map of Israel as of 1947 and today to see how they have reduced Palestine to an open prison, the world is not honest,

Singlein2020 · 27/01/2020 20:35

Hi folks.
This thread all went a bit weird and I don't really know today or make of it.

Patience is very real and a genuine person. She went home to help out her elderly mother who had been displaced.

I am sorry to say it but I am very ignorant of the situation in Cameroon but this while experience has opened my eyes. I also made me realise that she never talks about back home or what is happening.

She has been in touch with me directly. She is now in a different area closer to the airport. There is less trouble and it is safer.

She had a list of numbers written down on her phone of people she wanted to get in touch with before phones ran out of charge. Mine was on it as I was due to collect her. Her cousin wasn't able to give me the full message.

She is due back to the UK on Thursday. I can't wait to see her but mightily relieved that she is ok.

Footle · 28/01/2020 12:38

@Singlein2020 , it's been an eye-opener for me too, about the power of random bits of speculation and misinformation.

All the very best to Patience when she gets back. I don't know if you'll tell her about the thread but if you do , please tell her 'Ashia' from a stranger who feels for her.

stripeypillowcase · 28/01/2020 12:42

I am glad your friend is well and hope she can come home soon without further problems.

thank you to other posters about information about the conflict in cameroon. very interesting indeed if very sad.

I still hope this thread opened eyes to a very common scam.
