Sun, Skin and UAE holidays... a few questions...

We are off to the UAE at the end of August. I've been away many times over the years but never to somewere as hot and at the peak time of summer either.

First time to UAE - we've visited the Maldives, Thailand, Mexico etc but not such a humid and hot climate as UAE.

So I have a few Qs...

I haven't been on a foreign holiday for a year or two, and those weren't particularly sunny. I'd say my last real sun exposure (apart from a nice British summer last year) was probably about 5 years ago. I have fair skin. I usually go a bit pink then brown.

For me I've been wondering about a fake tan treatment before I go... so I don't look clearly milk bottle white when I go. However, whilst I know they can be controversial, I wondered if it is best to go to a tanning salon to build up my "sun" exposure before I go.

A local tanning salon has vertical booths and good reviews. I can buy blocks of 30, 60 or 90 mins ranging from £17 to £37 and she would draw up a programme of minutes for me, increasing over time.

For our son, aged 5 We are getting him a swimsuit that covers his legs/arms to tshirt/short level. Also some swim pumps so his feet are covered as I've heard the ground can be very hot, particularly tiles and sand. We will also get him a legionnaire style hat that covers his neck and some sunglasses. Does he need anything else to protect his skin, other than these and advice to seek out shade etc?

For all of us What is the best sunscreen to use in places such as UAE? We are staying beachfront so will be spending time in the sea, pool and on th beach. have seen the P20 once a day stuff. We can get 200ml for £16 approx. I would perhaps get 2 of these as they are once a day for all 3 of us, then a normal SPF 50 for topping up/after swimming etc. Can anyone confirm if this is a good idea, or should we follow something else? Buy something else?

If you can suggest a better plan from any of the above, or a better product, please do... Thank you.

Are you going to Al Aqah beach?

The hotel pool will be your saviour, but you will spend far more time in it that on the sunbed, even in the shade. Remember that you can burn in the water too. The sea is unbearably warm and once in it you will want to get back out again pronto.

I would wear SPF 30 for the first week and see how it goes. You can tan in that if you spend enough time in the sun. At this time of year and with a base tan already I wear factor 6 but am only out for a couple of hours at most.

Agree 100% with that, @PrimeraVez. Fujairah is actually one of the more interesting parts of the UAE for me, but no one is going to take a five year old wadi-bashing or to see around Bithnah Fort in the high 40s.

I arrived in Abu Dhabi for the first time in August, and found being outdoors for more than a few minutes literally unbearable for the first few weeks, and I was permanently exhausted from the heat until I adjusted somewhat and it became cooler as the autumn advanced. I mean, I was there to work, and was fairly realistic about what it was going to be like, but spending hard-earned money on a much-anticipated holiday where you are trying to enjoy yourself for the sake of the children in those conditions would be really grim.

If you do rent a car or get a shuttle bus into Dubai, for a 5 year old I really recommend the following (have a Google):

  • Dubai Aquarium (inside Dubai Mall which also has some shops that might appeal eg Candylicious, as well as an ice skating rink)
  • Green Planet
  • Oli Oli
  • Kidzania (also in Dubai Mall)
  • Ski Dubai (in Mall of the Emirates, has a fun ‘snow park’ for the younger kids)
  • Wild Wadi or Aquaventure (both are great water parks that will be ok just about for a few hours if you go early enough)

I love Fujairah but not for (presumably) a week's holiday in August. If it's the Royal Meridian the kids club is meant to be fantastic though.

cjt110 · 22/01/2020 18:12

@annabell22 Yes Al Aqah

I stay at the Meridien 3 or 4 times a year. If that's where you are staying, you will be very well looked after.

Another UAE resident here. There's a reason why we all leave for the summer - it's unbearable. If there's any chance of rebooking somewhere else then I'd say do that.

Two of children are ginger and ridiculously fair skinned, ive tried pretty much every sun cream going as we go abroad quite a bit.
Ime the best by far is ultra sun. They've never burned and it's anti allergy (one prone to heat rash) obviously we use uv suits and hats as well.
P20 nowhere near as good plus it's not suitable for the face as it really stings, it also stains clothes.

We also have a sensitive child and he copes with the Ultrasun sensitive. Not P20.

Well it sounds like a trip to hell rather than a holiday Confused
