Acting on stage - voice projection. Any tips, please?

This is my first time with an Am Dram group, in a panto. We've had the dress rehearsal and it went well, but I was told they couldn't hear me at the back of the hall and that I should shout. I don't have a strong voice and we have five performances. First one is tonight (yikes!). Once I lost my voice after talking with a friend for two hours! Any tips, please?

All they have said is about speaking from your stomach rather than your throat, but I have no idea how to do that.

That does sound odd I'm somewhere I can;t watch though)

I think it's just a slip of the tongue. But confusing for a newbie like me!

that's a thing sometimes done in singing, but very difficult. I'm sure she means 'with a full breath'

Also I have to do something important with a prop that has gone wrong a few times in rehearsal.

OH NO IT DIDN'T!! (Sorry)

Break a leg tonight. As for projecting - pretend your little one / teenager is upstairs doing something they shouldn't. That'll raise your volume Grin

Thank you Smile. And the advice from everyone is much appreciated and has been very helpful.

How did it go @MirandaGoshawk?

MirandaGoshawk · 23/01/2020 16:12

Thanks for asking! It went pretty well, and my projection was definitely better. I still need a bit more practice but some tips here were a big help (such as the uh uh sounds and diaphragm moving). The director was sitting at eh back and said she could hear me fine!

As to the performance, I was a bit late with one entrance but was told that it built the tension! So that's good. And my prop behaved itself. I got applause each time I went onstage! That came as a surprise. There was good audience participation, in the song, etc. So all good! I don't feel as terrified today. Smile Thank you all once again.

Have you watched The Goes Wrong Show on BBC? It's a spoof show about a rubbish am dram company with ideas above their station where everything, well, goes wrong. We cry laughing at it. It's on iplayer if you wanted a watch.

AChickenCalledDaal · 23/01/2020 20:39

So glad it went well Smile.

Yes, I've seen it. Must be very hard to do properly! They were on the Royal Variety I think - hilarious!
It went much better tonight! Except there was a little boy in the front row who commented all the way through. Me:" Is Captain Hook still about? If you see him, please shout out!" Boy: "He's in the curtains."
