How much should I pay for this?

DD is 18 but has had ME for 4 years and hasn't been in school. As part of her gradual transition back into education she's started an evening class once a week at the local college. Last term I took her myself, but it's more age-appropriate for her to go by herself, though she's not well enough to do it alone or by public transport. A taxi is also not an option.

So this term, one of DD's friends is going to be giving DD a lift and picking her up again 2 hours later. It is just to help DD out, friend is not going anyway. It's 4 miles each way, but about 15/20 mins.

How much should I give her for this? She has her own car and pays for her own petrol. I also want to compensate her for the time going backwards and forwards for DD.

Would friend otherwise be making the journey? Will she wait or go home and return? Maybe 50p per mile.

I think you should give her £20 for the evening.

£15 a week at least I think- it takes up a whole evening going back and forth twice.

Friend will be making a special journey. She'll probably go home and have her dinner after dropping DD off and then go back and pick her up.

What a lovely friend your daughter has. Smile

£20 a week .. maybe more? It's a lovely thing to do but quite a tie.

InOtterNews · 21/01/2020 14:58

Well a taxi would cost me around £12 for that distance (one way) - so maybe £15-20 per round trip on the basis it's a friend rather than a taxi company

Yes, I agree. She has been a lovely loyal friend to DD. DD has another friend who helped her prepare for the Maths GCSE last year, and I paid her £10 for an hour's lesson every week. So £20 to include the petrol sounds about right.

16 miles for each evening class, right? 80 minutes.

Min wage would mean £10-£12 for 80 minutes.
Costs to move the car = 30p/mile, or £4.80 each evening.
£20 to cover all costs would be reasonable.

Hi OP

your daughter's friend sounds lovely.

I'd make it £25 if you can - it's a big tie for your DDs friend, and running a car is expensive.
