I'm at a point I need a word to describe the female equally of willy for my son. We used willy and not penis as it is just as commonly used however now he is asking what girls have I'm stumped and realise there doesn't seem to be a universal word.

Mnetters with young children, what are we calling it?

Do you all use the anatomically correct words at all times for all body parts? Never a nickname or a cutesy (vom) name?

Err...yeah? Don't most people?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/01/2020 23:29

Not always. I'd say "ooh I've got a dickie tummy" or "can't wait to just sit on my bum" sometimes.

IJustWantToWearDungarees · 20/01/2020 23:34

It's really not "only on Mumsnet" that people advise using anatomically correct words. Safeguarding training in schools advises this, and our DS is taught this in primary.

JasonPollack · 20/01/2020 23:36

I find it odd that everyone seems happy to say willy and only alternatives to vulva are frowned upon? Vagina seems to be quite widely used even though its anatomically incorrect.

I will use Fanny with my dd as that's what was common when I was little.

Can't bear baby hole. Finding it quite hard to articulate why- I don't want my daughter to think her anatomy is only reproductive. Sexuality is so much more than that!

MiniGuinness · 20/01/2020 23:41

No, most people don’t use willy. And vagina is often used because it is also useful in telling children how they are made/born. I agree that it is often used in place of vulva, but still more understandable than noonie or whatever else is on this thread.

Nesquickly · 20/01/2020 23:43

My daughter was taught swimsuit area at school which made me laugh it's so sanitised but gets the point across I suppose. We say Willy and vulva or girl parts and boy parts because that is what differentiates them physically.

I had fairly progressive parents (for the 70's) and had no name for vulva at all I think. Incidentally, I (along with some contemporaries) was sexually abused by a local pillar of society over a period of time, such was the repressed society of the time that no one wanted to know even though we told the local GP. We were articlaute enough without accurate terms and it made no difference. The terminology is no protection against perverted thinking.

Funny that someone should begin this thread today as my son was in the living room and FRIENDS was on tv, Rachel was in labour and my son asked me how the baby came out. I told him that women push the baby out of their bodies, he asked if they came out of the pee hole, I said not quite but close and he pulled this face Shock and said “So they’re PEE MONSTERS?” Blush tbf Rachel was grunting like a good un, bless her. Sorry for derail!

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 20/01/2020 23:45

Yes odd that no one has a problem with willy - why? I've tried to use vulva but at the moment it's all just her 'bum bum' as she hasn't really differentiated and I'm in no hurry to either.

JasonPollack · 20/01/2020 23:46

Really @MiniGuiness have you surveyed all people? I think most people do use Willy. Certainly on this thread including in the OP and the post right below yours.

Oaky321 · 20/01/2020 23:49

In this house we use vulva for the vulva.

Why wouldn’t you?

MiniGuinness · 20/01/2020 23:51

But you stated everyone uses willy, so you could ask yourself the same question surely. I agree that willy is commonly understood, but I would argue that not everyone uses it. I do not know anyone either personally or in a professional capacity.

Chochito · 20/01/2020 23:52

vulva for vulva and vagina for vagina

JasonPollack · 20/01/2020 23:52

Lol are you asking your coworkers are you

KenAdams · 20/01/2020 23:54

God every time there's one of these threads I can't stop saying to my myself "it's vulvarrrrrrr not vaginarrrrrr" in the style of Hermione. Ahem. As you were.

MiniGuinness · 20/01/2020 23:55

But I do agree that it is more problematic that female body parts are treated as more secret or shameful. So that is particularly worrying with regard to safeguarding and more reason to teach girls vulva or vagina. And yes I do discuss with colleagues. You don’t know what I do so bit of an odd question.

LittleDragonGirl · 20/01/2020 23:58

But a willy is universally understood to mean a penis, the problem is many of the words used to describe a vulva are not universal and lead to confusion as they are family/geographically/generationally dependent. So imo I agree with using vulva, as it's not as hard sounding as vagina, and it saves confusion later on when they learn about the vagina and utheria (I cant spell that damned word!) As I remember being in school and classmates genuinely believing they peed out their vaginas as it had been used as universal term so they have no concept of the vagina being part of the vulva. Whereas willy and balls are pretty self explanatory

LittleDragonGirl · 20/01/2020 23:59

Hard=harsh

Notsure94 · 21/01/2020 00:03

My sons know they have penis and testicles. In conversation I've explained girls don't have those parts they have a vulva on the outside which looks a bit different. Giving anything twee cutesy names would be a bit weird. I am not sure it would serve them or anyone else well if they know they have a penis but a girl has a foofy foo or a special flower or some such nonsense.

PixieDustt · 21/01/2020 00:05

As a child I called it 'Minnie'

Mopmum35 · 21/01/2020 00:07

I always remember my mum calling our vagina 'Mary' so it just come naturally for me to use it for my dd's
I thought alot of women called it mary!Shock🤦‍♀️🤣

Bockbockcaboose · 21/01/2020 00:08

Nothing to add, but I approve of 'frybits' Grin

ParsleyPot · 21/01/2020 00:08

Pretty harsh on any females called Minnie or Mary.

katewhinesalot · 21/01/2020 00:09

Bits

Purpleartichoke · 21/01/2020 00:09

Start with vulva and then get more specific as the child ages. It’s never too early to learn the parts of your own body.
