When do kids get an email address?

My 7 year old DS wants an email address to email his grandparents but doesn't have his own phone or tablet so it seems pointless. At what age did your kids get one?

My dc had one at that age, for when their Dad was working abroad.
The fact I needed to log them on to the family computer, seemed to be an advantage, in terms of keeping them safe. Meant they only e-mailed him, or, in your case, their Grandparents.
I think it's rather lovely to be able to do that, if Grandparents are up for it. Smile

Not until they are 18.From what my MP tells me,there are plans afoot to tighten up children's access to internet etc.And about time too.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 20/01/2020 21:43

18??

Google family controls rely on you setting up an email address for the device. Both of mine had email addresses quite young on very very locked down devices (early primary age)

18! 😂😂😂 for an email address??

Fantababy · 20/01/2020 21:44

They get email addresses in secondary school, if not in primary.

Pipandmum · 20/01/2020 21:46

My kids from the start of secondary. Its attached to the school and It's how they get their homework assignments and communicate with teachers.

Elllicam · 20/01/2020 21:48

I’ve set up email address for all of mine as babies. It’s nice to send photos and occasional emails. They can have access when they are older.

NoSquirrels · 20/01/2020 21:50

From secondary it’s pretty much compulsory as schools use it.

As PP says, Google Family pretty much demands you give them one - I found that annoying.

I feel a bit odd about it and am not super happy but I think it’s part of a wider smartphone/internet access conversation about 10+, I guess.

PerspicaciaTick · 20/01/2020 21:51

Mine had them from birth, because we wanted specific email addresses. They actually started using them from about 13, but they don't use email unless forced to...it's just too old-fashioned.
FWIW. Secondary school gave them school-based accounts from y7 for contacting classmates about projects and emailing teachers.
The idea that you can be old enough to marry, work, join the army but not be able to send an email is ridiculous and quite clearly disconnected from the real issues around internet use.

DS1 just got one at school in Year 3. They've been doing an internet safety unit so I think it's related to that. I've been really enjoying getting emails from him at work.

KittenVsBox · 20/01/2020 21:54

Yahoo and gmail ask for your DoB, and wants you to be 13+, unless you have a family account.

Our previous school gave all the kids an account on starting reception. All homework etc was done online, but it was a [email protected]

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 20/01/2020 21:55

Kitten - Gmail give you a child account that needs parental supervision if under 13

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 20/01/2020 21:55

Sorry, didn't read that properly 😴

Yubaba · 20/01/2020 21:58

My dc all got one in year 3 at primary, as it’s a school address the school can access it to make sure there is nothing iffy going on as needed.
DD also got one at high school, again a school address.

thelongdarkteatimeofthesoul · 20/01/2020 21:59

I thought, before opening the thread, that you were somehow under the impression that an email address would be allocated in a similar fashion to a national insurance number Grin

My DH, registered our children's email addresses on the same day as we registered their births, so that they could have their proper full names @ well established main domain name and not be olivia.green7496 or similar Grin

That doesn't mean that they had the use of their email addresses at 8 days old though...

okiedokieme · 20/01/2020 22:04

My kids had ones as part of our home broadband supplier with parental controls from that age (I could log in and read everything), school issued them with emails at 10

okiedokieme · 20/01/2020 22:06

@Classof66

My kids had to submit school assignments by email, I strongly suggest you consider teaching your kids safe access rather than hindering their education

Classof66 · 20/01/2020 22:55

I do not have children,I am interested in keeping children safe online, and that includes mobile phones.

KatyN · 21/01/2020 09:04

Gmail allows you to block every address except .... so my 6 year old has an account which only could receive emails from his grandparents.
Every message was also cced to me.

He loves it.
