removing something off Medical records

Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help me or has had a similar situation, i've just joined a new GP surgery and went for a GYN examination the other day, we was talking about my medical history and the doctor asks me if i have a personality disorder? i told them i do not and i saw it was on my medical records.

I went home and looked through my medical records and some Doctor i saw when i was 18 and dealing with really bad depression said the following statement "we talked about the possibility of you having a personality disorder and you agreed it fit, I believe you had a chaotic childhood and this has left you feeling out of control of your emotions" this to me isn't a diagnosis is a personality disorder.

Anyways i complete forgot about this and i never saw anyone again from 2013 to 2018 then i engaged with mental health services again as i had a really traumatic event happen to me and the professionals just said i was depressed. I saw them twice a week for months surely they would of picked up on a personality disorder? i worked with children's mental health services aswell when i was younger as i was depressed and again they just said i was depressed.

What can i realistic do about this? i know i don't have a personality disorder and this is really upsetting that they are bringing it up and saying i have it when i don't. I don't understand why its not being mentioned after all this time? none of my other gp have ever told people so i just i am baffled

I don't know what the answer to this is. Am watching with interest.

Ask for GP to refer you to secondary mental heath services for a reassessment. I believe common thought now is that personality disorder diagnoses should not be given to teenagers and young adults (regardless of symptoms) so seems to be grounds for this to be re-looked at.

If your record is incorrect you can ask for it to be corrected, but it looks as though this is an accurate reflection of what happened at the time?

Lexi95 · 20/01/2020 20:04

Thank you i will do and i agree that personalilty disorder shouldn't be given to Teenages or younge adults. I will definitely say that thank you

From what I know, parts of medical records cannot be deleted but they can later be corrected with additional notes. Pwuld you be happy to just ask your GP to write something clarifying that you don't have and have never been diagnosed with a personality disorder? If so I think you could ask for that to be written in your notes at your next GP appointment.

LokiLocks · 20/01/2020 20:33

You could request that a note be added to it. It doesn't sound as if any diagnosis has been made, more that it was floated as a possibility. A diagnosis would or should only be given after a referral to C.Psych or psychiatry for further investigation. I can understand that you don't want it notes so you could ask for a note to be put on the file.

Assigning a permanent and often problematic diagnosis on anyone is something that many are finally stepping away from and BPD should be one of the first to go imho.

Hope you get sorted.

A one off comment, after one meeting, hardly constitutes an official 'diagnosis' surely?

Lexi95 · 20/01/2020 22:10

@chikTIKI

Thank you, i will go and speak to the GP, i would be happy for the GP to write that i was never diagnosed with it, i will give that a try thank you should much.

@LokiLocks

Thank you i will, that is what i believed but then when the gyn asked me about it i was confused. This is what i thought i believed i would of had to off gone further investigation to see more professionals and then go from there?
I am glad a lot of professionals are finally stepping away from it, it is a problematic diagnosis and can be a harmful labels as well as people get treated differently.

Hope you get sorted.

@Oblomov20

This is what i thought? How can a woman who saw me for around 45 minutes to 1 hour just diagnose me with it but other professionals who see me often never even mentioned it? baffles me
