Nutramegin; how long does it take to work?

So today my 5 week old has been prescribed nutramegin formula due to possible cow's milk protein allergy.
She has rash all over face, neck, shoulders and chest, strains to poo, arches back, lifts knees to chest, looks on pain when farting or pooing, bloated tummy, spitting up after feeds etc...

Anyway we are hoping the formula will help settle her, how long before previous formula is out of her system and this formula hopefully works. She's only had 2 bottles of it so far, but is still spitting up after feeds, I'm guessing it's normal and will settle? 🤷🏻‍♀️

It took our little boy a couple Di days for the milk to kick in then he couldn't get enough !

It takes a while for the symptoms to setting. Iirc it took around a month for my nephews to really improve but once the cow milk had totally left their systems they were so much happier!

Also it tastes vile and we had to put flavouring in the bottle to mask the taste- we used alcohol free vanilla flavouring though sugar free coffee syrup works as well (and comes in a bigger bottle!)

My DD was on Nutramigen for a while. We too used vanilla at first. It is disgusting! We saw improvement after a day or so but she still had tummy trouble so she was changed to Neocate. She was a different baby overnight on that stuff!

Hope it does the trick OP

They are all different. If it is cow’s milk protein your little one is reacting to, you should notice a difference within a week with the extensively hydrolysed formula and hopefully symptom resolution within 2-4 weeks. If it improves, the GP may ask you to challenge with a standard formula after this period to confirm the diagnosis.... if there is only partial symptom resolution with Nutramigen, they may consider a trial of amino acid based formula (e.g. Neocate LCP). If none of the hypoallergenic formulas resolve symptoms, they should explore alternative diagnosis (? Reflux? Etc.).

Should add, they think that 90% of all babies with cow’s milk protein allergy tolerate extensively hydrolysed (Nutramigen, Similac Alimentum, Aptamil Pepti etc), only 10% of babies are apparently allergic to the extent of needing amino acid based formulas (Neocate LCP, Alfamino, Puramino etc).

Our dietician and Paed advises the milk protein still stays in their system for 2-4 weeks. My daughter however carried on reacting and moved to Neocate.
Nutramigen is a lot
Thinner than normal formulas though so they could provide you a thickener such as carobel if reflux is also a issue x
