City break help!

Ginplease29 · 20/01/2020 16:31

Can anyone recommend a good place for a city break in the UK for a couple in their late 20s? I’m from the midlands, we have been to Cardiff, Swansea, Newcastle and London.

I was thinking of York possibly, has anyone been? Any ideas for things to do or what it’s like at night?

Or if anyone has anywhere else they’d recommend, I’d appreciate it Smile

BubblesBuddy · 20/01/2020 16:35

Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol, Exeter, Norwich and Birmingham are all great.

vegvegveg · 20/01/2020 16:35

Bristol or Brighton

SuzieBishop · 20/01/2020 16:36

Edinburgh!! So much history, beautiful architecture, heaps of restaurants and loads of bars!

IggyAce · 20/01/2020 16:37

York is lovely there are loads of pubs and bars in York. Could do a ghost walk there are several available. Could take a boat ride along the river. York castle museum is good, take a walk along the castle walls. You will find loads to do.
There is also a outlet shopping just outside of York.

Dublin. It’s the one city I return to pretty much every couple of years. You can have so much fun there going to temple bar with all the live music - people of all nationalities are out having a great time. It’s so lively and unique. Loads of gorgeous independent shops, cafes, restaurants. Interesting things to do like the books of Kelly’s at trinity college or the Guinness factory.
If you can afford it stay at the Westbury on Grafton street (Wilde restaurant in the Westbury is a lovely treat) or the Westin. Brooks hotel or the Gresham are nice too and cheaper. Bewley’s coffee house is a must-do.
Great shopping on Grafton street but also all the little streets running off it, also at powerscourt townhouse and make sure to have a browse in Avoca. I think Dublin has a very individual feel that lots of other cities just don’t have anymore - I love the place! Flights are also really cheap if you can be flexible with times.

Sorry just realised you said in the UK! York would be a good bet yes, but if you can do it - I say branch out and go to dublinGrin

Shmithecat2 · 20/01/2020 16:46

Bath, Winchester, Salisbury.

Fanniesyeraunt · 20/01/2020 16:48

Also, although liverpool is very urban and not a place to go for gorgeous architecture etc. you will have a fantastic night out on Matthew street. I had some of the best nights out ever in Liverpool - And I say that as a Manchester girl!

wowfudge · 20/01/2020 16:53

I love Brighton. Visit the Pavilion, walk along the seafront and go onto the pier, etc. The Lanes are good for a wander and shopping.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/01/2020 16:54

York is great as is Edinburgh.

msmith501 · 20/01/2020 16:56

Liverpool, Chester, York, Edinburgh, Glasgow

katy1213 · 20/01/2020 16:58

York is lovely. (I don't think I'd be in a hurry to spend a weekend in Manchester or Birmingham, maybe a day to visit the excellent art galleries, though.)
But there's so much to see in York and it's an easy city for walking. Full of history - the Castle Museum is interesting and last time I was there I discovered that the Railway Museum is fascinating even if you've no great interest in trains. The Minster is stunning but just wander the streets, there's something to see on every corner. Good for music and theatre and lots of restaurants. I always come away wishing I could have longer.

Mamabear88 · 20/01/2020 17:00

I'm Mancunian so biased there but we do have a good choice of bars, restaurants, cinemas and clubs, all within easy reach of the centre. Junk yard golf is really fun, there's the cat cafe if you're cat people or all star one has bowling and amazing cocktails. There's also loads of escape rooms. I've not been personally but there's a bar called The Washhouse which is meant to be cool. Matt & Phred's Jazz Club is great also.

York is lovey too though, you can't go wrong there!

MerryGrinchmas1 · 20/01/2020 17:04

We flew to Dublin for £40 return each from Birmingham airport!
Hotels are not too expensive and it's a lovely city x

Ginplease29 · 20/01/2020 17:19

Thanks everyone, just going to have a google of some of the places mentioned Smile

I'm going to suggest Glasgow too, depends what your interests are but Glasgow would suit most. The West End in particular with the Kelvingrove museum your highlight.

Liverpool or Edinburgh, manageable and walkable. Love the architecture in both.

Liverpool both cathedrals are fab.

SingingSands · 20/01/2020 18:53

Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Chester, Bath, Brighton, Sheffield

SingingSands · 20/01/2020 18:53

Oh, and another one... Hull! No joke - had one of my best ever nights out there a couple of years ago!

Agree. Don't discount Glasgow, either. It's a great place for a city break.

York and Chester are both very attractive cities so you won't go wrong if you do go to York. And Chester is close to lovely countryside in North Wales as well as Cheshire itself.

In the other direction, Rye in East Sussex is worth a visit. Another option might be a "dual centre" Portsmouth and Chichester.

And as someone has suggested Dublin, what about Belfast?

cologne4711 · 20/01/2020 18:57

Actually forget all that. Couple in 20s looking for nightlife? Liverpool, Liverpool or Liverpool.
