Don't talk about weight in our family

Interesting article in Guardian today about how we should be talking to children about weight.

I think it makes some good points about trying to erase fat phobia but I'm conflicted as whether this should be the message :

"That’s just Grandpa – when he grew up there wasn’t a lot of food around, so he gets really upset when people leave food on their plate. In our time we have too much food, so it’s OK to leave it if you’ve had enough.”

We are a very wasteful society in so many ways.

What does everyone think of it? Interested in thoughts

This is interesting. OH's family is riddled with EDs and the children's weight is often commented upon. I've been in a situation where one of them was scared to eat something because they feared their parent's reaction. My own child has picked up on the food rules in her cousins' family and questioned me about them. She's has much more autonomy over what she can eat and we don't talk about diets etc. It's tricky to get a balance though.

I think that quote seems a nice, kind way of explaining why people have different attitudes to food.

Going to read the article now.

Yes this should be the message. Children shouldn’t be encouraged to eat past hunger they should learn to stop when they are full.
If you’re worried about waste and children are routinely leaving food on their plate then as a parent you to give them smaller portions.

We never talked about weight when I was growing up and I don't think or worry about my diet or weight at all. It doesn't really feature on my radar. I could probably stand to be a bit healthier truth be told but I'm not overweight.
