Getting all confused by car hire insurance

Hi all

We're going round in circles trying to arrange car hire in Dublin for the weekend.

We're attending a wedding on Saturday, arriving Friday and leaving Sunday and have worked out it'll be cheaper to hire a small car to get around than the taxis required.

The car is £35 including basic insurance but the 'supercover' is £30 per day which no longer ends up cheaper than several taxis....

Do people normally take out the extra insurance? Do they do a hard sell on it?

We'll use the car to travel from the airport to Dublin on the Friday for a wander around then to the hotel about half an hour outside Dublin where it'll stay until we return to the airport....if that helps for context....

Sorry, should've stipulated insurance for a trip to ireland rather than normal every day car insurance....

What does the supercover cover? Is it the additional excess cover? If so you can take that out separately yourself...google car hire excess insurance.

Martin Lewis has been talking about this for a while - I'm sure it's on his site or here's a link www.express.co.uk/life-style/life/1141282/martin-lewis-mse-money-saving-expert-car-hire-holiday-tips

You can buy a policy in the UK for a fraction of that price, as explained in the moneysavingexpert guide. Car hire extras are a total rip off but easily avoided by following the advice on MSE.

If you sort out your own insurance be prepared to leave a big deposit, hundreds of euros or even 1k+. Best have a credit card available, so they don't put a hold on the contents of your current account.

Thanks all, £4.50 and excess insurance all sorted.
It comes with basic insurance and says they only take a deposit if that is declined but credit card is loaded up in case.....
