Trying to give DD some 'real' careers advice - she has her options coming up and is worried that she doesn't have a plan!

I have a friend who is a zoologist and marine biologist to masters. They have only ever worked in voluntary roles(in that field) and do menial minimum wage jobs, to top up some writing for magazines.
They are still trying to get a place to do their PhD (years on) . From what I can can gather, it is a very difficult to make a living in that field of work.

Does your daughter's school have careers advice? What do you mean by 'real' advice?

Wanting to be a marine biologist is a bit like wanting to win X factor, as a career goal.

Went to Maldives last year and was interested that a number of islands/resorts have resident marine biologists working with dive and water sport centres, give talks, run coral regeneration projects etc. Island I was on had marine ecology centre. The mbs were a mix of full time/on study related work. Was an interesting angle to the job I hadn’t been aware of before. Was proper - much more than ‘window dressing/green washing’.

GCSE options?
Let her do the subjects she's interested in.
You typically need science A levels to study a marine biology degree- so your Dd will be doing GCSE science as core subjects.

And honestly, it's ok to explore creative subjects.
