Teenage Boy shaving question

ilovespinach · 17/01/2020 16:29

Posting here for traffic.....
It looks like 13 year old de will need to start shaving soon. Just wondering what young teenage boys shave with, whether they use wet razors or electronic shavers. Brand recommendations welcome 😁

DS uses a wet razor, Gillette do these big starter packs with loads of blades which works out cheaper in the long run. And then uses whatever shaving gel I buy.

On a general skincare note, he uses Bull Dog skincare for men and it’s really helped with his spots.

Wet shaver here too (DS that is not me Grin).

DH showed him how to do it but I think there may be some good videos on YouTube.

I use Gillette Fusion Pro blades, and I vary between their antibacterial and sensitive foam. A good moisturiser is essential. I'm getting very good results with Clarins Men, but then I'm nearly 60 and my skin is beginning to lose elasticity. Also, I have enough money to indulge myselfWink

My DS started with a beard trimmer set to shortest.

veryvery · 17/01/2020 17:50

Just got mine an electric shaver when he started get beardy. I did ask him whether he wanted to grow a beard before I bought it.WinkAnswer was a resounding 'No!Grin Main reason chose electric is that they're less likely to cut the face to ribbons.

veryvery · 17/01/2020 17:51

Skin care wise we buy him a cream with silver in it. Gets rid of teenage spots pretty well.

Pipandmum · 17/01/2020 17:53

My son does wet but did get one of those battery operated trimmer sets off Amazon. Gillette razors for him too. He uses Simple face wash and moisturiser. He doesn't get spots but that's mainly genetics.

CanISpeakToYourManager · 17/01/2020 17:58

veryvery what brand cream please?

My son has an electric shaver. Will NOT discuss it so this seemed safest.

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/01/2020 18:01

I'm not a guy, nor do I have a son, but I can't rate highly enough, King of Shaves, shaving oil.

Is 13 the usual age for boys to need to start shaving ? Mine is 16 and is as hairless as an egg shell.

AhoyMrBeaver · 17/01/2020 18:18

I don't suppose there is a usual age, a bit like when girls start periods. 13 is normal, and so is 14, 15, 16...

Itsagrandoldteam · 17/01/2020 18:18

My DS was 14 when he starting getting facial hair. I bought him a Star Wars Philips electric shaver, I wouldn't trust him not to cut his face to pieces with blades.
He is 16 and still only shaves about once a week.

CanISpeakToYourManager · 17/01/2020 18:54

My son just started shaving and just turned fifteen.

Thanks, veryvery!

veryvery · 17/01/2020 18:56

You're welcome. Smile

Oldraver · 17/01/2020 19:05

We bought DS a Philips basic shaver. It has foil head so thought it would be better to start with and gentler on the skin

ilovespinach · 17/01/2020 19:11

Thanks for the replies. I alsothought 13 is a bit young but he mentioned it earlier and said he's got a beard 😂

I'll look for a moisturizer too.

Rather than an electric, if he doesn't start with wet shaving, he may find it difficult to do it later. It's very handy when travelling or in certain careers where you may be away from civilisation. But if he gets teen acne a wet razor may cut the tops off and make them worse.

IMO foam is better than cream

you can get "sensitive skin" versions like Nivea. The scented ones might cause irritation.

branded multiblade razors are better than disposables or own-brands. AIUI Gillete has bought up all the razor factories and also makes the own-brands, deliberately made to be not as good.
