Anyone good at working out calories cos the maths is making my head hurt!

And I do not understand how 36grams of broccoli is 140 calories Confused

So it's broccoli crisps (a 36 gram packet)

There are two ingredients only - broccoli and rice bran oil

The rice bran oil is ONLY 2% - so I think that's 0.7 grams of rice bran oil

If 14 mls of rice bran oil is 120 calories (according to google) - and 1 ml = 1 gram ?

and 36grams of broccoli is only 13 calories.

WHY THE FUCK ARE THE CRISPS SO HIGH IN CALORIES ?

No expert but I’d guess the broccoli is somewhere dried out and therefore the calories to gram are more concentrated.

Somewhat**

They're high in calories because they are fried in oil. Simple as that. You'll be better off eating steamed broccoli and avoiding crisps altogether if you're concerned about caloric intake.

Hmm

It's 2% fat and 98% broccoli

And this is a maths question, not some weird thread where people comment on each other's eating habits

And I'm not at all 'concerned' about calorie intake

Aren't there 4.6g of fat per bag based on the nutritional info?

TheFastandTheCurious · 17/01/2020 15:57

Because the broccoli will have started off much heavier and drying it will concentrate any sugars

mynameiscalypso · 17/01/2020 15:58

And a gram of fat is about 9 calories. So that plus the concentratedness of the broccoli adds up.

LaurieFairyCake · 17/01/2020 15:59

Ok so if it's 4.6 grams of fat that's 50 ish calories of oil?

Leaving 90 calories of broccoli?

It's because the broccoli has been massively dehyrated, as well as the calories from the oil.

If 36 g of fresh brocolli is 13 calories, that suggests that your dried up bits of brocolli (sorry OP, these don't sound appetising at all) have been made from an awful lot more fresh brocolli and then dydrated down into 'crisps'.

Food dehydration is a thing, either for preservation, or for making 'healthy' snacks, which may not be that great, because a lot of what stops people binging on brocolli is that it doesn't taste that nice is that the water contained in it makes it high volume so more filling.

wowfudge · 17/01/2020 16:02

The pack states 2.3g fat in half a pack. If the rice bran oil accounts for all the fat then there are 4.6g fat in a whole pack.

I've looked online and there are 40 calories in a teaspoon of rice bran oil which is 4.5g. Near enough 4.6g.

When the broccoli is fried it will lose water. Only if you dipped raw broccoli in the oil would the broccoli have the same composition as the broccoli you've checked the calorie content of.

TLDR - the pp who states it's somewhat dried is correct.

mynameiscalypso · 17/01/2020 16:03

The reminder will be the broccoli, yeah - protein and carbs have 4 cal per gram and you've got 20g of them together in the packet.

wowfudge · 17/01/2020 16:03

I agree with Barbara - for the same reason eating whole fruit is better for you then drinking fruit juice.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/01/2020 16:03

The 2% of oil could also be 2% of the original weight of brocolli, not 2% of the finished product, so would be more than 2% by weight of the crisps.

lazylinguist · 17/01/2020 16:03

But it's not 2% fat according to the nutritional info on your first photo - it says 13g of fat per 100g, so the crisps are 13% fat.
I reckon it's because they make the crisps starting off with ingredients of 98% broccoli and 2% oil, but during the frying/drying process, the large proportion of the broccoli which is water is cooked away, leaving a much higher proportion of oil to broccoli in the final product.

lazylinguist · 17/01/2020 16:04

Yep, other people put it more simply already. Grin

HairyDogsOfThigh · 17/01/2020 16:05

Well OP, i agree that something doesn't add up from the info from the packet. On one section they claim the fat is 2%, but if you work out the %age from the nutritional info there are 4.6g/36g packet, so over 25% fat (they must be using very fatty broccoli).

HairyDogsOfThigh · 17/01/2020 16:12

Forget what i just worked out, my brain is fried (possibly deep fried in bran oil Grin). Yeah, they must have measured the 2% fat against the original volume of broccoli before it was dried.

HairyDogsOfThigh · 17/01/2020 16:14

It's misleading though, because the packet claims 2% fat, but the nutritional info works out to be about 11% (my previous maths was wrong).

BarbaraofSeville · 17/01/2020 16:24

It probably says in unreadably small print somewhere that the 2% oil is based on the original weight of the fresh broccoli.

It also says that the 36 g pack contains two servings, so make sure you share them with someone else or save some for later OP Smile.
