How to get DP to stop rinsing after brushing teeth?!

NewYearNewUserNameForMe · 17/01/2020 14:44

I know I have no jurisdiction over DP's face, mouth and oral hygiene habits

But DP rinses out his mouth a lot after brushing his teeth every time. Twice a day, copious amounts of water. A few years ago, the dentist told me and DP that rinsing wasn't good at all. I stopped. DP just carried on.

His teeth are going yellow and they've got weird brown lines on them. I've no idea if its connected to rinsing but surely rinsing isn't helping things?

I tell him occasionally he shouldn't rinse but he either bats my comment away because I'm not a dentist (fair play), tells me to stop policing him (dramatic but fair play), or comes up with some excuse as to why he has to rinse that particular time (bullshit because he does it every bloody time).

So I went for the kill. One day when he complained that his teeth were yellow I said it was because he rinses after brushing. He had a huff, carried on rinsing and said he didn't actually care about how he looks anyway.

I may be blowing it out of proportion but I really worry about this and what it'll mean for his dental health long term.

I've no idea why I'm posting this, it's playing on my mind.

You should rinse as you are rinsing the fluoride from the toothpaste off.

roiseandjim · 17/01/2020 16:58

Sorry SHOULDNT rinse

My dentist has been telling me this for years, she also says never use mouthwash. My theory is that you really have to do it twice. Once with a rinse to get rid of food particles that you have brushed off, then again with just a spit.
I can't get into it though.

Honestly OP I think you need a hobby Smile

Leave him be.

Wow. I had no idea.

You'll be telling me not to flush tampons next! Grin

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 17/01/2020 17:08

Our dentist has advised not to rinse or use mouthwash. We had a brushing before or after debate at home so asked her advice, she advised either is fine, but if having orange juice to brush before or leave it at least 30 minutes after.

I think YABU to keep going on about it. I'd apologise, but gently suggest that he asks his dentist for advice on the marks next time he goes, or to arrange an appointment with the hygienist for a good clean and advice.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 17/01/2020 17:10

My dentist and hygienist both advise not to rinse so that the fluoride stays on your teeth longer. Incidentally, hygienist also swears by salt and hot water rinse if you need a mouthwash for any reason - more effective and cheaper! Firms up your gums if you have problems with bleeding.

starfishmummy · 17/01/2020 17:12

I was advised not to rinse because I use a sensitive toothpaste. My current dentist not only agrees but suggested that I could just smear a little of the toothpaste on to a bit that was being extra sensitive.

KenzoBaby · 17/01/2020 18:07

I spit and don't rinse.
30 mins later, I eat breakfast.

I always rinse. I also brush my teeth with warm water.
I'm almost 50 and can I just say, I have amazing teeth. Not one filling.
Very proud. Smile

Strandliv · 17/01/2020 18:13

I don’t rinse.

Having said that I don’t think rinsing can be making your husbands teeth yellow and brown. His teeth are clearly being stained by something, coffee, tea?
A trip to the hygienist should sort him out.

BackforGood · 17/01/2020 18:21

I may be blowing it out of proportion

Yup

However, if his teeth are "yellow and have got brown lines on them" I think it might be a good idea for him to discuss this with the dentist. This is not however a product of the pretty normal routine of rinsing your mouth out after brushing your teeth.

pineing · 17/01/2020 18:31

I rinse. How else do you get rid of the froth?

MiniTheMinx · 17/01/2020 18:33

I'm 47 and another one with no fillings. I use coconut oil instead of mouthwash. I oil pull for about 5 to ten minutes. Rinse with warm water then brush. I rinse after I've brushed. I smoke, and drink tea and coffee and my teeth are white, no stains. I'm allergic to most toothpaste, I can only use one type.
I really don't think rinsing can cause yellowing.
And I'd be pissed off if DH was policing my choices in the bathroom. Very weird.

Sakura7 · 17/01/2020 23:22

The things you learn on MN...

My dentist has never told me not to rinse. I've never had a conversation with anyone where this has come up. I've always rinsed and am really surprised to hear I've been doing it all wrong for 30 years Confused

Equanimitas · 17/01/2020 23:26

I wish some dentist would explain why it's desirable to leave the food bits, plaque etc that you've removed from your teeth in your mouth.

ClientListQueen · 17/01/2020 23:26

At night I use a water floss first to dislodge any bits then brush. Never rinse, I went as much fluoride on my teeth as I can!
It's kind of like applying body lotion then rinsing it off otherwise

ClientListQueen · 17/01/2020 23:27

@Equanimitas I guess you spit the majority of that out and if you floss first then ever better. You would just swallow/spit any food bits

Likethebattle · 17/01/2020 23:31

you should brush before eating. You are harming your teeth just as much by brushing after eating.

BecauseReasons · 17/01/2020 23:32

You're one of those weirdos who brushes before eating! No problem with this if you brush after eating.

@NewYearNewUserNameForMe Oh, OP. That isn't on at all- as PP said, you are supposed to brush your teeth before eating, as contact with the food causes acid production and brushing too soon after eating effectively rubs the acid into your teeth. If you're doing it after eating, I hope you're doing it at least an hour after the meal, as recommended. If you're going to be an oral hygiene pedant, you've got to get it right.

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 17/01/2020 23:34

Despite what dentists say, I'm going to here on rinsing well as I don't want to swallow a mouthful of chemicals two or three times a day!

(And my teeth are perfectly white with no fillings at 40 btw)

ShakeItUp · 17/01/2020 23:35

Just to throw in here that you are supposed to brush your teeth thoroughly on waking before you have anything to eat or drink.

AdoreTheBeach · 17/01/2020 23:37

Interesting. I learned something new today. Perhaps I didn’t know about not finding as I grew up in a country with flouride in the water. .

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/01/2020 23:45

You do know that you still spit the toothpaste out right? You don't swallow it, i don't really feel like i have any residue left after spitting out.
