Who does that thing with money and 3 jars?

Have seen mentioned a 3 jar thing to budget.

I struggle to budget, worst areas are food shopping. I spend a lot on petrol but can't change that.

If I had cash I think I might be able to see what I'm spending unnecessarily.

I think it would be easier if you explained what it is so we don't all have to run off and google.

I havnt heard of this , .can you explain it

Rainingdogsandcats · 17/01/2020 12:25

I'm not sure how it works. I saw it mentioned on a thread once when someone was talking about an app that separates your money for you and someone said oh I'm sticking with the 3 jars.

I suppose it's just divide up your money into jars and just use cash. Lol

( Goes off to Google)

Found this. I think this is kind of what I mean.

I wondered if anyone uses this way of budgeting.

Monzo is an online bank account that does this for you rather than cash.

Might work better in a digital age

DesLynamsMoustache · 17/01/2020 12:33

Yes was about to say Monzo. It has pots, which are basically jars, and you can pay bills from certain pots, use certain pots for specific things, round up transactions into pots, etc.

DisinterestedParty · 17/01/2020 12:36

Some banks have a function where you can divide up one account like that.

It would definitely be better than actual jars of money, which just seems like a faff.

Drabarni · 17/01/2020 12:39

I collect change in jars and tins and take them to bank when I have a fair bit.
I also take out money very week and pay for shopping in cash. This way I'm not tempted to buy other things, because I only have what i take out.
Keeping track of accounts and moving money around can also help with budgeting too, as when you manage to have a bit left over you can transfer to one where you may struggle a bit.

I have many jars. I take cash out once a week and never use my card. If you havent got it with you to you cant spend on things you dont need. I have a friend who spends £100- £150 a week on shopping for just 2 adults, that is outrageous. She moans like hell about having no money but moans like hell about how much food goes in the bin. Cash is king
