Aldi formula milk in hospital

Jayl111 · 17/01/2020 09:23

Just wondered if anyone had any experience of using the Aldi formula milk from new born, and what they took into hospital with them as ready made milk. I would like to use the Aldi formula as hear good reviews about it and it’s so much cheaper then other brands, however bit put off by them not having ready made for hospital bag. If I started with another brand what should I use and would it be ok to change soon as got home. Many thanks

Hospitals have facilities to make and sterilise bottles. Just take powder and your chosen bottles pre sterilised.

Midwife at hospital told us aptimil was made in the same factory as mammia milk.

Jayl111 · 17/01/2020 09:32

@AgathaVanHelsing apparently at my local hospital we have to take ready made.
@littleduckeggblue oh is it that’s good to know, may have to check ingredients list on both and see if there is much difference
Thank you

You have to take ready made in most hospitals. The ingredients are very similar. My child started on cow and gate premature formula and then we moved onto aptamil. I really wouldn't worry too much about moving to a different formula.

ChocolateCoins19 · 17/01/2020 09:36

Our hospital has no facilities. We have to take ready made.
My. Mw also said aptamil is same as sainsburys.. And even all the rest there's not much difference in.

GrumpyHoonMain · 17/01/2020 09:40

You need to take ready made - hospitals often won’t let you make formula Outside of neonatal

No they don't.
Our hospital didn't. They do have single use bottles you can use though. I just went with cow & gate.

Ginfordinner · 17/01/2020 09:42

I would think that hospitals want to minimise the risk of infection, which is why they advise on bringing ready made.

GrumpyHoonMain · 17/01/2020 09:48

True plus often their water supplies aren’t sterile enough for babies. My local hospital has a seperate water supply for neonatal that they (not parents) use for formula / enrichment.

Long story short I ended up having to formula feed DS when I was in unexpectedly. We went with the little premade Aptamil bottles. When we came home we switched to Aldi. Absolutely no issues for DS, no dodgy tummy or anything like that.

zsazsajuju · 17/01/2020 09:52

My hospital refused to make up or give out formula for ideological reasons. Take ready made aptamil and you can swap to Aldi when you get back. I wish I’d swapped to Aldi when dds were young enough not to care, would have saved a fortune.

Anyoed · 17/01/2020 09:52

My hospital did have facilities to make and sterilise bottles but you were not allowed powder it had to be sealed ready made bottles incase anyone tried to tamper with the powder milk . It's crazy to think that anyone would do this

EatItWithYourHands · 17/01/2020 10:10

Nothing wrong with Aldi. @Jayl111 check out the great formula milk scandal, its available on catch up on all4. I think it's a dispatches episode

OneTooManyBathtimes · 17/01/2020 10:16

Agree about aptamil ready made, then switching to Aldi. It's what we did.

However, DH then got the ready made SMA stuff for DS for our train journey home at Christmas a month after DS was born and he refused a bottle after that. Anyone I've ever spoken to said bad things about them.

I blame DH though as I told him to get the aptamil ones but he either didn't see them or really didn't look and just grabbed the closest thing he could see. If we'd started with SMA maybe things wouldn't have been so bad.
(Disclaimer: DS was combi fed until that point as was having some problems with nipples and latch. After that journey he had to be purely breastfed. Refused bottles all the time. Still does now at age 2 but loves a straw Hmm )

My son has Aldi formula and swaps between that and ready made apatil when required, never had an issue. They're made in the same factory in Ireland.

ReginaGeorgeous · 17/01/2020 10:29

Aptamil*

AgathaVanHelsing · 17/01/2020 17:47

@PixieDustt Confused my hospital had full facilities. You got given your own steriliser issued for your sole use whilst in hospital if you were formula feeding and there was a sink and bottle brushes and a kettle.

Admittedly that was 7 years ago as I went straight home with DC2.

PixieDustt · 17/01/2020 17:51

That's good that yours have it.
Ours only had a room where you could get hot boiled water and single use bottles.
Was yours a maternity hospital?

Jayl111 · 17/01/2020 18:33

Thanks so much everyone Aptimil sounds like the best bet then on to Aldi. Thanks for the advice
