Didkdt · 16/01/2020 22:04

I ve had a request for driver information as my car was caught doing 24mph in a 20 zone.
The thing is I wasnt in that city on that day. I was in another part of the city the day before
There are no contract details and the form which I have to fill in has 3 boxes one if I'm the driver
One if someone else was
One if I no longer own the car

I am the owner but i wasn't there
What can i do other than a cover letter

There is no picture just the 3 sections you have to fill in one. No contact number or email address just a return address for the form

Usually you can view the image online. Is there nothing on the letter about this?
Same thing happened to us,it was a white van with fake plates (ours is black bmw)

Didkdt · 16/01/2020 22:59

There is nothing on the letter but I will send a letter back recorded delivery

Just ring head office in the morning. Don't flap about with sending a letter, because if it is a genuine NIP then you've only got so long to respond.

saraclara · 16/01/2020 23:48

This is important. DO NOT COMPLETE THE NIP FORM of it wasn't you driving. From the link earlier in the thread:

If, however, you were not driving or do not know who was driving i.e. there are more than one insured persons or you were sharing the vehicle that day, then you should not return a signed NIP. If you do so, then it is unlikely that you will be able to reverse it .

Instead, you should write to the address given on the NIP stating that you acknowledge receipt of the NIP and explain that it was not your car and where you were at the time. Ask what they require from you and ask to pause the process while the situation is investigated.

cabbageking · 16/01/2020 23:54

It isn't unusual for a misreading.
Contact them and tell them it isn't your car and that they need to check the screens again.

Didkdt · 17/01/2020 10:51

I've read the letter over and over no details about how to request the image and no website
I shall have to write back by snail mail

Its a Notice of Intended Prosecution, a request foe driver information. You are not entitled to see any evidence at this stage.

Complete and return the within the timescale, otherwise you will be charged with failing to provide driver details. That is not related to the speeding issue and applies even if the NIP was issued in error.

Once you revieve the offer of either a course or points, you can then explain about the error.

If you call them now there is a good chance that somebody will mess up and you'll be charged with failing to name the driver.

Trust me on this. I have been through your exact situation last summer.

But I WAS charged with failing to supply driver details because like an idiot I called the ticket office and thought that the person I spoke to knew what the fuck they were doing.

Didkdt · 18/01/2020 01:15

So if you get an IPN from the Met it seems you need to private message them on Twitter.
They asked for all the details then wrote back to ask if I thought my car may have been cloned
I am now on the APNR and will be stopped every time a camera picks me up
Just so we're clear I've never committed an offence but I'll be stopped by the police regularly until they catch the person who has.
This coming a month after my son was chased down the road at knifepoint but the police have passed it on to community support because there is no CCTV available
I feel like we might as well replace the entire force with cameras and computers

If there are no contact details then how are you supposed to return the form ? There must be an address and phone number ?

Didkdt · 18/01/2020 01:43

There is a po box address, but it has been a frustrating process the assumption is you or someone you know has committed an offence

I had this once but the reg no quoted - which was mine) was linked to a make, model and colour of car which was not mine.

I wrote back to inform them and they cancelled the charge.

SpoonBlender · 18/01/2020 10:42

I know it's aggravating, but you can't complain about being stopped by cameras in case you're the number plate cloner AND complain that your son's attackers can't be identified due to lack of cameras.

First point, no, you won’t be stopped every time a camera picks you up. You may be stopped if you are seen by a police car fitted with anpr capability.

Have you been advised to place a piece of tape on your plates? That can assist officers identifying the genuine vehicle as they van differentiate the plate on camera.

Would you rather they don’t place an anpr marker and just ignore your cloned plates?

If there is no cctv in place where your som was attacked then community support officers are often best placed to investigate. They generally have a better relationship with the community and people tell them things.

As pp said, you can’t have it both ways. Too many anpr cameras but not enough cctv? Tbh anpr is a very effective and simple tool and makes a massive difference to road crime. Cctv is much harder to service, monitor and maintain as it’s not automated like anpr..

ApacheEchidna · 18/01/2020 12:05

the assumption is you or someone you know has committed an offence

in the vast majority of cases this is true.

and if the path for having it acknowledged as false was simple and easy everyone would do it.

FuchsiaG · 18/01/2020 15:43

I had this happen a few years ago. I knew I hadn't been where they said the car was so I phoned up and told them (there was a number on the letter I recived). The person i spoke to was able to view the images and she confirmed that the number plate, make and model of the car matched mine, but then she said that the car was blue, my car is white. She then gave me an email address where I was able to email photos of my car and scan and send a copy of my log book which stated the colour of my car.

A few weeks later I received a letter to say that the fine was not being upheld.

Didkdt · 18/01/2020 23:48

I know I'm being unreasonable about the stopping but I haven't been spoken to by anyone and no one mentioned tape.
There was no email address it contact number
My problem is my son is so cross about the police not doing anything because of no CCTV now I've had to explain we are Likely to be stopped by police even though we've done not
The knife thing has run really deep as the people who aided DS weren't even interviewed about what they saw until 2 weeks later it's really upset him

This happened to us, you have to write by snail mail but I ended up calling as well. The picture was blurry and the numberplate might have been out by one digit or it might have been cloned plates. We never found out. Didn't need to prove anything in the end. I was also all poised with Google maps location data etc! Didn't need anything like that. Seems it happens all the time. Try not to worry :)
